Awareness Raising Session on Covid 19 in Ahmed Mallah:

On 27th August 2020 (Thursday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Muhammad Usman along with the Social Mobilizer – Mr. Abbas and Health Assistant – Mr. Hassam organized a one day health & hygiene awareness raising session in the community of Ahmed Mallah. This community is located in district Thatta at a distance of 36 kms from the main road.

The community was informed about the severity of Covid-19 and the precautionary measures to stay save from this disease. Altogether, 47 vulnerable households were facilitated with anti-bacterial Dettol soaps weighing 50grams each. OSDI received these soaps as a kind donation from Robinhood Army.

OSDI’s staff distributed 5 soaps amongst each household. Soon more informative sessions shall be delivered in the focused communities to educate the villagers about safety measures.

Distribution of Plants donated by HNP:

On 22nd August 2020 (Saturday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt along with Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz distributed the 150 plants received from Hingol National Park in the vulnerable community of Sayarani Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). Due to severe weather conditions caused by strong winds and heavy rains the community suffered immense loss as their property got damaged.

OSDI has distributed 50 conocarpus, 25 neem, 25 paras pipal, 20 jungle jalebi, 20 sirya and 10 jamun trees amongst the 30 affected households of this revenue village. Each family was facilitated with 5 plants. Beneficiaries were chosen from the communities of Sayarani Goth, Saleh Goth, Umrani Goth, Mangya Goth, Yousuf Goth and Bilal Khaskheli Goth.

The villagers thanked OSDI for helping them rebuild their lives once again.

Online Teachers Training for Lasbela:

OSDI’s Education Officer – Ms. Saira Rashid conducted a two days online teachers training session from 18th (Tuesday) - 19th August 2020 (Wednesday). Due to the current pandemic situation of Covid-19, the district government has called-off all social gatherings or meetings until further notice.

Teachers from the OSDI built Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) attended the knowledge sharing sessions via skype in the OSDI’s field office. Mr. Rahmatullah and Mr. Ghulam Hussain from the TLC of Sayarani Goth, Mr. Abdul Ghafoor from TLC of Pini Ladhoo Goth and Mr. Sulaiman from TLC of Chamasara community were amongst the participants.

Ms. Rashid engaged the teachers in various theoretical and practical activities for team building, learning and relearning strategies, classroom management, student assessment, etc.

OSDI Mardan Celebrated 74th Independence Day:

On 14th August 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s Field team of district Mardan (KPK) organized a little ceremony in the OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Arab Seray in Union Council of Bazaar. The event was marked to celebrate the 74th Independence Day of Pakistan.

Mr. Nawar Khan - General Council of Village Committee was present as a Chief Guest in this celebration along with the presence of Mr. Ijaz and Mr. Saeed, respected teachers of OSDI built TLCs in Arab Seray and Baizad Banda. Students sang patriotic songs and national anthem with zest and zeal.

OSDI’s Mardan Team took all possible precautionary measures as per the government SOPs for the safety of the participants.

Independence Day Celebrated in Thatta:

To celebrate the 74th Independence Day of Pakistan on 14th August 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s Team Leader of district Thatta – Mr. Muhammad Usman collaborated with the district government officials to participate in an awareness raising walk.

Nearly, 105 senior representatives of the government, various ngo’s, academia, media, etc. marched from the Police Station of Sakro to the Press Club. Assistant Commissioner (Mirpur Sakro), District Education Officer (DEO) (Thatta), Tehsil Education Officer (TEO) (Mirpur Sakro) and Muktiarkar Revenue Department (Mirpur Sakro) graced the event with their valuable presence. The walk was held to highlight the importance of education and create awareness about it.

Later on, a Jashan-e-Azadi event was organized by NCHD in the OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Yaqoob Jokhio community. More than 109 individuals whole-heartedly attended this event. Participants sang patriotic songs, delivered speeches, read poetry and remembered the sacrifices of martyrs to win this piece of free land.

3rd Phase of Livestock Vaccination in Thatta:

OSDI’s Team Leader for district Thatta – Mr. Muhammad Usman invited the senior representative of Government of Sindh’s Veterinary Department – Dr. Noor Hussain Jatoi on 10th August 2020 (Monday) in his office. The meeting was held to discuss about the health issues of livestock provided by OSDI to the vulnerable beneficiaries of the Yaqoob Jokhio community.

Later on, Dr. Jatoi conducted the third phase of livestock vaccination on the 65 goats provided by OSDI and 188 other animals of the community members. Each animal was given a single dose of Enterotoxaemia (ET) vaccination. It’s a life-threatening gastrointestinal tract infection which effects the eating habits of the animals.

The community thanked OSDI for having their animals vaccinated against this disease.

SMC Meeting to reconstruct TLC Sayarani:

On 10th August 2020 (Monday), OSDI’s Team Leader for district Lasbela (Baluchistan) – Mr. Rashid Butt organized a meeting with the representatives of School Management Committee (SMC) of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Sayarani Goth. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss about the reconstruction of the TLC.

Unfortunately, due to the strong winds the 2 classrooms based TLC’s infrastructure got severely damaged. Hence, a new TLC has to be built as a replacement. Students from 5 adjacent communities of Sayarani Goth attend this school i.e. Bilal Khaskheli Goth, Yousuf Goth, Mangya Goth, Umrani Goth and Saleh Goth.

Current enrollment in this school is 100 amongst which 57 are boys and 43 are girls.

First Phase of SREP initiated in District Thatta:

OSDI initiated the first phase of Small Rural Enterprise Project (SREP) within the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh), to provide suitable means of earning a respectable livelihood. Under this phase, 4 young men have been selected to begin their small businesses. On 22nd July 2020 (Wednesday), facilitation to each of these beneficiaries was completed.

Amongst these beneficiaries 2 members have chosen to open up their grocery stores whereas, 1 member has set up a vegetable shop and the other has launched an electrical spare parts and repairing shop. OSDI has supported each beneficiary with an average amount of PKR 48,000 approximately.

Prior to this project initiation, OSDI has conducted a Financial Literacy Training to educate these beneficiaries about the basic details on profit and loss calculations, purchasing of goods, book keeping, etc.

Phase 2 – SREP initiated in District Lasbela:

On 30th July 2020 (Thursday), 2 vulnerable beneficiaries of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) have been supported to initiate their own businesses. Both these beneficiaries were barely able to earn prior to OSDI’s intervention.

Mr. Sajan, a young resident of Sajan Goth from the revenue village of Chamasara was supported to keep grocery and confectionary items in his store. Prior to becoming an SREP beneficiary, Mr. Sajan earned an average monthly income of PKR 4000 – 4500 from both his small shop and tea stall. Mr. Dhani Baksh from the community of Pini Ladhoo used to earn his living by doing open labor and had a small shop within his home which was looked upon by his mother in his absence. The young man hardly managed to earn PKR 9000 per month.

Amongst the 4 beneficiaries nominated in this phase, the remaining 2 beneficiaries shall be supported in the upcoming days.

Sandals distributed to Students of TLC in Yaqoob Jokhio:

On the auspicious occasion of Eid, OSDI distributed sandals amongst the students of Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). The activity took place on 29th July 2020 (Wednesday) in which all 275 students enrolled in this TLC were facilitated.

As the school is currently closed due to the pandemic situation the students were called in small groups ensuring a suitable distance amongst each other. The TLC teachers gave them a pair of sandals along with a box of chocopies and tang sachets each. These food items were generously donated by Robinhood Army.

The students got overjoyed to receive new sandals two days before Eid.

2nd Phase of Ration Distribution in District Lasbela:

Robinhood Army donated 150 ration bags to OSDI for the less privileged families of district Thatta (Sindh) and Lasbela (Baluchistan) during this month. On 21st July 2020 (Tuesday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt and Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed completed the distribution of 75 ration bags amongst all the susceptible communities of their district.

5 scattered communities located in the revenue village of Chamasara received 29 ration bags. These small communities comprise of Azam Goth, Sajan Goth, Umar Goth, Shero Goth and Laung Goth. 15 bags were given to the families of Kareer Goth, 5 in Bilal Khaskheli Goth, 10 in Chib Sheikh, 3 in Jano Goth, 3 in Yousaf Goth, 1 in Sayarani Goth, 1 in Mangyani Goth, 2 in Shareef Colony, 2 in Duura Goth, 1 in Gap Kori village and the remaining 3 bags were provided to the support staff of OSDI’s field office.

Majority of the families supported were of widows or physically disabled people.

Online Teachers Training in district Mardan:

On 17th July 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said organized a meeting with a teachers of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) in Baizad Banda and Aran Seray. The aim of this meeting was to inform them about the upcoming online teachers training by the Education Officer – Ms. Saira Rashid.

The training sessions were conducted via skype on 23rd (Thursday) and 24th (Friday) July 2020 from 9am to 1pm. During the training Ms. Rashid briefed the teachers about strategies for lesson planning, classroom management, behavior management in classroom, use of audio & video aids and assessment methods. After the training question & answers sessions was conducted to enquire about the day to day issues and problems faced by both the teachers.

In near future, such trainings shall also be held in the other focused districts of OSDI.

DC Lasbela meets Education and Health officials:

On 21st July 2020 (Tuesday), the Honorable Deputy Commissioner – Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema called for a follow-up meeting with all the social sector and government representatives working in the fields of Health and Education. The aim of this meeting was to know about the ongoing and upcoming projects being organized in district Lasbela (Baluchistan).

OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt attended this meeting along with other senior representatives of social sector. Mr. Butt informed about the progress of OSDI over the span of 3 years and how positive interventions have been made in the field of Education and Health.

The efforts of OSDI have been recognized at all governmental levels.

Covid-19 Awareness Sessions in Thatta:

On 17th July 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s Health Assistant – Mr. Hassam visited the vulnerable communities of union council Kagan to conduct awareness raising sessions on Covid-19 in district Thatta (Sindh). Altogether, 105 people from the communities of Ahmed Mallah and Muhammad Khaskheli were trained during the 2 sessions.

The activity began with a brief introduction by Mr. Muhammad Usman – Team Leader (Thatta) in which he informed the people about the various projects launched by OSDI in the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio. After which Mr. Hassam educated the people about the severity of Covid -19 disease and how it can be prevented if appropriate safety measures are taken into account.

Later on, Ms. Saira Rashid – Education Officer urged the communities about the significance and necessity of education to improve their lives. OSDI distributed disposable face masks amongst the participants.

Phase 2 of Ration Distribution in Thatta:

On 15th July 2020 (Wednesday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Muhammad Usman travelled to 2 deprived communities of union council (U.C.) Kagan in district Thatta (Sindh) to distribute ration. This U.C. is located at a distance of 2km from the main coastal highway. People living here mainly work as laborers or fishermen.

OSDI facilitated 45 households of Ahmed Mallah Goth and 30 families of Babu Mallah Goth with one ration bag each; along with 6 packets of tang juice and 1 box of chocopies. Both the communities have family size of 8 people.

The people were grateful for this generous donation and thanked OSDI for extending its support during these hard times of Covid-19.

Installation of 2 Water Facilities in Thatta:

During the first phase of Agriculture Development Project (ADP) in the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta, 12 deserving farmers have been selected to harvest chillies on 22 acres of farmland. These farmers faced difficulty in watering their crops due to insufficient amount of river water available. As the water level goes down during summers there erupts a water shortage for a period of 3 -4 months. Hence, the farmers requested OSDI to drill bore so this water shortage could be met.

OSDI divided these farmers into 2 Groups and facilitated them by drilling of 2 bores. Depth of the first bore is 37ft and the other is 32ft. The installation of water pump for Group 1 was completed on 25th June 2020 (Thursday) and for Group 2 on 5th July 2020 (Sunday). On 10th July 2020 (Friday), the installation work of diesel engine was finished. The capacity of each engine is 16hp.

As of now, 400 liters of water is being extracted per minute from these water facilities.

First Financial Literacy Training in Thatta:

On 30th June 2020 (Tuesday), OSDI’ district Thatta team conducted the First Financial Literacy Training for the newly selected beneficiaries of Small Rural Enterprise Project (SREP). 4 beneficiaries from the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio have been facilitated to initiate their own small businesses.

Mr. Muhammad Usman – Team Leader (Thatta) educated the beneficiaries about basic details for Financial Management in which information about record keeping and maintenance, purchasing of goods, calculating monthly profits, customer handling and establishing market linkages were briefed.

Mr. Mevo Jokhio from Wali Muhammad Paro Muhallah and Mr. Muhammad Jokhio from Bhai Khan Paro Muhallah have been supported to open grocery shops and an electrical parts shop has been opened for Mr. Saffar Jokhio at the village center point. Mr. Gulsher Jokhio, the 4th SREP beneficiary has been helped to run a vegetable and fruit cart.

First ADP training conducted in Thatta:

In the susceptible community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh), OSDI has initiated the first phase of its signature Agriculture Development Project (ADP) during the month of May 2020. 12 farmers have been chosen to participate in this phase to harvest 2 types of chillies on 22 acres of farmland.

OSDI appointed Mr. Ghulam Hyder Kalamati to educate and train the farmers about modern agrarian practices and techniques. Farmers were briefed about the crop cultivation and production methods which could help them increase their yields.

The training was held in the OSDI’s constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Yaqoob Jokhio on 30th June 2020 (Tuesday).

Pre-Assessment of Beneficiaries in LDP - Phase 3:

On 19th June 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt and Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed visited the community of Chamasara in union council Kehnwari in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) to interview the secondary beneficiaries of livestock. The purpose of this meeting was to enquire about the distribution of kids born from the goats donated by OSDI during the 3rd Phase of Livestock Development Project (LDP).

Altogether, 17 beneficiaries from Chamasara and 3 beneficiaries from Kareer Goth in union council Wayaro were selected to participate as primary beneficiaries in this phase. As the does provided by OSDI were pregnant at the time of distribution kids born out of these does had become 2-3 months old now. It was decided that further 9 deserving beneficiaries would be facilitated with 1 doe kid each to create a multiplier effect.

All of the newly selected beneficiaries are working as open labors.

Financial Literacy Training for Phase 2 in Lasbela:

On 19th June 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s Team in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) conducted the First Financial Literacy Training for the beneficiaries of Small Rural Enterprise Project (SREP) in Phase 2. During this phase, 4 unemployed and educated beneficiaries have been selected to participate.

OSDI has chosen 3 males and a female beneficiary from which 1 participant is from Pini Ladhoo and the remaining 3 beneficiaries are from Chamasara. Mr. Dhani Baksh – a resident of Pini Ladhoo community and Mr. Sajan from Chamasara have been nominated to initiate confectionary and grocery business; whereas, Mr. Azam intends to initiate a multi-purpose business to sale cosmetics and petrol.

On the other hand, Ms. Amina Khatoon shall be supported to initiate her own tailoring and embroidery business from home.

Distribution of Milk & Biscuits in Lasbela:

OSDI sent the donation of nearly 960 boxes of biscuits * 24 ticky packs (each) and 13,500 milk packs of 250ml size for the vulnerable families of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) on 29th May 2020 (Friday). The generous donation was received from Robinhood Army.

On 17th June 2020 (Wednesday), OSDI’s Lasbela team distributed the milk and biscuits amongst the 15 families of Kareer Goth and 30 families of Chamasara. The next day 20 families from Pini Ladhoo were supported and on 20th June 2020 (Saturday), 18 families of Bilal Khaskheli Goth and 10 families of Mangyani Goth were provided. Representatives from each village were invited to OSDI’s Lasbela office to collect the milk and biscuits on behalf of their communities in order to avoid any gathering.

During this pandemic, provision of surplus food items provided food security to the people of deprived communities in district Lasbela. The villagers thanked OSDI and Robinhood Army for their support.

7th Phase of LDP initiates in District Mardan:

Purchasing of livestock during this phase occurred in 2 sessions due to the spread of Covid-19. 10 beneficiaries were supported in each session. On 26th February 2020 (Wednesday), OSDI purchased and distributed 20 pregnant does and 2 bucks and now on 15th June 2020 (Monday), 20 more pregnant does and 2 bucks have been handed over to 10 other beneficiaries.

Susceptible families from union council Bazar have been facilitated during this phase i.e. 8 beneficiaries from Biroch community, 3 beneficiaries from Boday Qabar, 5 beneficiaries from Prrang Dara and 4 beneficiaries from Baizad Banda. Members of the Livestock Purchasing Committee accompanied the OSDI representatives for the selection of goats.

The beneficiaries thanked OSDI for supporting them with livestock during this pandemic situation.

Construction of Temporary Learning Center in U.C Kagan:

Mr. Muhammad Usman – Team Leader of district Thatta made a visit to U.C. Kagan alongwith the representatives of NCHD on 10th June 2020 (Wednesday) to look for a suitable site for construction of a Temporary Learning Center (TLC). Mr. Abbas Memon and Mr. Zohaib Memon Field Officers at National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) teamed up for this initial visit.

There are 4 small communities i.e: Babu Mallah, Ahmed Mallah, Hashim Jatt and Muhammad Khaskheli each located at a distance of approximately 1 – 2kms within this union council. Future of 150 children is at a stake of falling illiterate as there is no educational facility available.

Upon selection of a suitable location OSDI shall initiate construction of a TLC and move forward with active social mobilization for enrollment of students to acquire education.

Distribution of milk and biscuits in Thatta:

On 5th (Friday) and 8th (Monday) June 2020, OSDI’s Team Leader deputed in district Thatta – Mr. Muhammad Usman distributed the donation of milk and biscuits provided by Robinhood Army in the focused vulnerable communities of Yaqoob Jokhio, Ahmed Mallah and Babu Mallah. Altogether 273 families from these communities were facilitated with the nutritional packs.

OSDI’s Health Representative – Mr. Hassam-ud-din also delivered awareness sessions on Covid-19. He educated the people on precautionary measures to stay safe from this disease and the benefits of hygiene in their routine life. SOPs as directed and highlighted by the district government were also informed to the people.

Specially designed pamphlets on the importance of basic guidelines to stay safe from Covid-19 were also distributed amongst the people.

2nd Session of Livestock Vaccination in Yaqoob Jokhio:

On 2nd June 2020 (Tuesday), the second session of livestock vaccination in the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh) took place. OSDI’s team collaborated with the representatives of Veterinary Department in unit Mirpur Sakro District Government of Sindh to vaccinate the animals against Enterotoxaemia disease. The disease is known to damage the intestines of the animals which result in death.

A day prior to the activity Dr. Noor Hussain Jatoi (Assistant Livestock Development Expert) accompanied by OSDI’s team visited the village and asked the people to ensure their animals are inoculated the next day. Also he closely observed the dead body of an expired goat to diagnose the cause of death and helped in arranging for the appropriate medicine to vaccinate the remaining animals of the community. Anti-Enterotoxaemia ET vaccine was administered to 200 goats and 122 other animals of the community amongst which 34 does, 4 bucks and 40 kids were provided by OSDI to the susceptible beneficiaries under the first phase of Livestock Development Project (LDP).

The next day a single dose of Hepaton was also provided to the 38 goats given by OSDI on 3rd (Wednesday) and 4th (Thursday) June 2020 to detox the liver as a precautionary measure. Ms. Shama a member of Community Livestock Extension Workers (CLEW) also extended her support during the vaccination campaign.

Robinhood Army Donates Milk and Biscuits:

On 29th May 2020 (Friday), OSDI received a generous donation of 71 cartons of half roll biscuits and 25,000 milk packs of 250ml quantity. Each biscuit carton contained 24 boxes of biscuits having 6 half rolls in each box.

OSDI has sent these milk and biscuits in the focused districts of Lasbela (Baluchistan) and Thatta (Sindh) to be distributed amongst the vulnerable households of our targeted communities. In the upcoming days, health & hygiene awareness sessions shall be conducted within these communities to educate the people about precautionary measures to fight against Covid 19 and other diseases.

Few milk and biscuits have been donated for the educational institutions associated with OSDI’s sister concern The Rabia Azeem Trust.

ADP Phase I initiated in Yaqoob Jokhio:

First phase of OSDI’s signature Agriculture Development Project (ADP) was initiated in the susceptible community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh) on 29th May 2020 (Friday). 12 beneficiaries have been selected to grow 2 types of chillies on 22 acres of farmland.

HiFly or Hybrid Hot Pepper F1 from Protech vegetable seed and Rossy F1 chillies from Rachna Agri Business also known as Kari Shehzadi have been grown by the farmers. HiFly is used in the kitchen for routine consumption and Rossy F1 is used for making pickle or achaar. It is also used as red chilies for cooking purposes.

The average monthly income per beneficiary was PKR 11,758 and average monthly expenditure per beneficiary was PKR 13,739 prior to intervention.

Solar Water Pump placed in TLC of Yaqoob Jokhio:

On 19th May 2020 (Tuesday), OSDI installed a Solar Water Pump (SWP) in the Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). A 300 meters pipeline was placed with 150 watts of Solar Plates in the school premises having a battery of 50 watts.

6 water connections at a distance of 50 feet each were made from which 5 were located within the TLC and 1 was at the village entrance. Nearly 100 ft pipe was used within the parking. Total area of 500 ft land has been facilitated for watering of plants under the Natural Resource Management project (NRM).

Soon the plants shall turn the TLC into a green house.

Phase 2 of Ration Bags Distribution in Mardan:

For the poverty stricken families of district Mardan (KPK), OSDI once again received a donation of 150 dry ration bags from Robinhood Army on 14th May 2020 (Thursday). These dry ration bags were distributed on 22nd May 2020 (Friday) within the community of Saeedabad, U.C. Rustam, district Mardan (KPK).

Beneficiaries facilitated during this second phase of ration distribution belonged to the areas of Muhallah Akhun Baba, Muhallah School Banda, Muhallah Saeedabad, Muhallah Gulli Bagh and Muhallah Bahadar Banda in Saeedabad. OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said allotted tokens to each head of the family. Altogether 12 widow families were also amongst the beneficiaries supported.

Beneficiaries were initially briefed about the importance of health & hygiene and precautionary measures to stay safe from diseases.

OSDI Focused Communities Receive Ration Bags in Mardan:

On 6th May 2020 (Wednesday), OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said distributed ration bags within the 150 vulnerable households of our focused communities. Most of the bread earners of these beneficiary families were daily wage workers working as mountain laborers.

OSDI provided ration bags to 20 susceptible families of Boday Qabar village, 20 households of Prrang Dara, 65 families from Biroch and 45 families from Baizad Banda. Beneficiaries were asked to form a queue after which tokens were distributed amongst them then distribution of ration bags began in a serial order to ensure best practices for mob management. Social distancing measures were also kept into consideration by the district team of OSDI.

Village elders and community members were extremely grateful to OSDI for providing them food supplies during the pandemic situation.

OSDI Donates PPE suits in DRA meeting:

Upon the call of District Commissioner – Thatta a meeting was held on Disaster Relief Assistance (DRA) on 27th April 2020 (Monday) to know about the progress and response on emergency lockdown due to COVID 19. The meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) – Mr. Muhammad Arif Kalwar.

Senior representatives of social sector and government were invited to attend this meeting. On behalf of OSDI, Mr. Muhammad Usman – Team Leader of district Thatta participated and briefed about the distribution of ration bags within the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio. Mr. Usman also presented 10 Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) suits provided by Asim Jofa; as a welfare initiative to protect the lives of doctors and paramedical staff from being exposed to the corona virus.

ADC -1 and Director of Social Welfare Department – Mr. K. B. Behrani thanked OSDI for proactively playing its role.

Distribution of Ration Bags in District Lasbela:

On 24th April 2020 (Friday), vulnerable people living in the focused communities of OSDI in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) were facilitated with ration bags. The 193 families from various small and scattered villages were provided with 10kg atta, 5kg rice, 5 kg lentils, 3kg sugar, 5 liters of cooking oil, half kg tea, 1kg powder milk and 3 soap bars.

OSDI’s team distributed the ration along with the support of the district government officials in Azam Goth, Bhakrani Goth, Bano Hussain Goth, Bilal Khaskheli Goth, Janu Goth, Jumman Goth, Kareer Goth, Long Goth, Mangia Goth, Mangyani Goth, Miru Suleiman Goth, Moosa Goth, Pini Ladhoo Goth, Sajan Goth, Saleh Muhammad Goth, Shero Goth, Sayarani Goth, Umer Goth, Umerani Goth and Yousuf Goth.

Due to the huge travelling distances between each community local transport was used by the villagers to transfer the rations on behalf of their fellowmen.

OSDI Distributes Ration Bags in District Thatta:

On 23rd April 2020 (Thursday), OSDI successfully distributed the 193 ration bags donated by Robinhood Army in the susceptible community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). Each head of the beneficiary family was asked to bring along their CNIC card for data collection purposes. Another objective for this exercise was to maintain transparency amongst the beneficiaries.

OSDI followed all safety precautions as per the directions of the district government for mob control and management. Each ration bag donated consisted of 3kg sugar, 10kg atta, 3kg rice, 1kg daal mong, 1kg daal masoor, 1 kg daal mash, 1kg daal channa, 1kg kalbi channa, 1kg baisan, 1 packet of salt, 5 liters of cooking oil, 385gms tea, 950gm milk powder, 1kg dates, 1 bottle of Roh Afza and 2 soap bars.

The villagers were grateful to OSDI for its support during these dire times.

Robinhood Army Donates Ration Bags:

On 23rd April 2020 (Thursday), OSDI received a donation of 386 dry ration bags for the vulnerable families residing within our focused communities of district Thatta (Sindh) and Lasbela (Baluchistan) by Robinhood Army. The organization serves to provide surplus food items to the under-privileged people ensuring food security and lowering the risks of malnutrition. Later on, 150 ration bags have been received on 27th April 2020 (Monday) for the susceptible families of district Mardan (KPK).

Ration bags donated for the 193 families of Yaqoob Jokhio Goth in district Thatta consisted of 3kg sugar, 10kg atta, 3kg rice, 1kg daal mong, 1kg daal masoor, 1 kg daal mash, 1kg daal channa, 1kg kalbi channa, 1kg baisan, 1 packet of salt, 5 liters of cooking oil, 385gms tea, 950gm milk powder, 1kg dates, 1 bottle of Roh Afza and 2 soap bars. On the other hand ration distributed in the focused communities of district Lasbela and Mardan consisted of 10kg atta, 5kg rice, 5 kg lentils, 3kg sugar, 5 liters of cooking oil, half kg tea, 1kg powder milk and 3 soap bars.

Majority of the beneficiaries facilitated within the OSDI’s focused communities were daily wage workers and laborers earning an average of PKR 9,103 per month.

Asim Jofa Donates PPE suits to OSDI:

On 21st April 2020 (Tuesday), OSDI received a generous donation of 65 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suits for the doctors and paramedical staff located in the district hospitals of our focused regions. Mr. Asim Jofa, a renowned Pakistani fashion designer stepped forward to facilitate OSDI at this hour of national crisis.

PPE suits are used to protect the wearer’s body from being exposed to infection or injury. It helps in lowering the chances of virus transfer. Each packet received comprised of a face mask, safety face shield, shoes protector and full body suit. OSDI has disbursed 25 suits to the Tehsil Hospital in Rustam city in district Mardan (KPK), 15 suits have been provided to DHQ Hospital in Utthal city in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) and 10 suits have been handed over to Taluka Hospital in district Thatta (Sindh).

OSDI is grateful to the supportive team - Mr. Mohammad Jawed (CEO’s Accountant), Mr. Mohammad Imran (Manager Admin) and Ms. Samia Saeed (Head Designer) at Asim Jofa for their timely assistance.

OSDI Donates Ration Bags amongst COVID 19 Exposed Families:

On 18th April 2020 (Saturday), OSDI donated ration bags amongst the 12 vulnerable families of Gul Abaad in village council Landhi situated in union council of Bazaar, district Mardan (KPK). These families were quarantined by the district government as a precautionary measure because they got exposed to COVID 19. The virus spread due to the local travelling of an infected patient from Buner district. Being old the patient could not survive from this disease and passed away.

Upon being informed about this dire situation Mr. Sajjad Said – Head of District Mardan (KPK) arranged for ration items for the affected households. Nearly all these families comprised of daily wage workers. The ration bags provided by OSDI consisted of Flour, variety of Lentils, Rice, Green Tea, Dry Fruits, Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables. Soaps and Face masks were also provided as protective items against lowering the chances of spreading of this disease.

The community was grateful to OSDI for reaching out to them.

NRM Phase 2 Initiated in Lasbela:

On 27th February 2020 (Thursday), OSDI received a generous donation of 100 plants from the senior management of Hingol National Park in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). The plants have been donated for the vulnerable community of Sayarani Goth.

Mr. Rashid Butt – Team Leader of Lasbela has received 20 Conocarpus, 20 Sirus, 20 Jamun, 20 Kikar, 10 Sukchain and 10 Neem trees from the authorities. Plantation of these trees was completed on 5th March 2020 (Thursday) within the premises of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the community.

Earlier, OSDI had 80 plants sowed in this TLC and 20 in the community mosque.

Livestock Distribution in District Mardan:

7th Phase of Livestock Development Project (LDP) initiated on 26th February 2020 (Wednesday) in district Mardan (KPK). Prior to distribution of livestock Dr. Liaquat – veterinary expert at OSDI checked and monitored the health of the livestock given. He also conducted an awareness session on the different types of diseases found in cows and goats and how to keep the animals safe from them.

OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said gave away 20 pregnant does and 2 bucks to the 10 selected beneficiaries from its focused communities. Purchasing of the remaining goats is soon expected to be completed in the upcoming days after which 10 more beneficiaries shall be facilitated. During this phase local breed goats have been purchased. Terms and conditions about the project were briefed in detail by the HoD to the initial beneficiaries of this phase.

First kid born out these goats shall be handed over to another beneficiary, thus creating a multiplier effect by expansion of beneficiaries.

Vaccination of Livestock in Yaqoob Jokhio:

During the first phase of Livestock Development Project (LDP) in the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh), 20 susceptible beneficiaries have been awarded with 45 goats by OSDI. After conducting an initial training on livestock maintenance, OSDI’s appointed veterinary expert - Dr. Phreeth, had all the goats vaccinated.

All the 40 does and 5 bucks given were inoculated with a dose of the de-worming medicine. This was done to protect the animals and their kids from becoming a victim of parasite attack. Dr. Phreeth also checked the weight and height of all the goats distributed by OSDI.

The beneficiaries were grateful to OSDI for extending its support and educating them about the health of the livestock.

First LDP Training in Yaqoob Jokhio:

OSDI gradually initiated its intervention in the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio located in district Thatta (Sindh) few months ago. According to the socio-economic survey conducted by OSDI prior to intervention, majority of the people living in this village earned their living through wood cutting, farming and other mediums.

On 22nd February 2020 (Saturday), the first training of beneficiaries facilitated under the Livestock Development Project (LDP) was organized by OSDI in the Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Yaqoob Jokhio. A renowned practicing veterinary expert in Mirpur Sakro, Dr. Phreeth was invited to train the people looking after the animals donated by OSDI. He educated the beneficiaries about livestock maintenance, breeding, fat-fattening, fodder preparation, shelter maintenance, de-worming and overall handling.

15 females and 5 males attended this training session.

2nd GMC held in Biroch community:

High up in the mountainous region of district Mardan (KPK), is a small village called ‘Biroch’. Last year OSDI, organized its first free General Medical Camp (GMC) in this community in which 216 patients were treated.

On 20th February 2020 (Thursday), OSDI once again organized a second GMC within this community in collaboration with Al Khidmat Mashal Medical Complex. Nearly, 285 patients comprising of 129 males and 156 female patients were treated during this one day medical camp. Provisionally diagnosed patients were facilitated with free medicines by OSDI. Amongst the patients treated, 65 were little children belonging to the age group of below 5 years.

It was observed that majority of the patients suffered from seasonal fever, flu, respiratory tract infection (RTI) and general body weakness issues.

LDP - Phase I Initiated in Yaqoob Jokhio:

On 10th February 2020 (Monday), the first phase of OSDI’s Livestock Development Project (LDP) was initiated in the focused vulnerable community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). 20 deserving beneficiaries comprising of 15 males and 5 females were selected to benefit from this project.

OSDI purchased Kamori goats for the beneficiaries as it is known as a dairy breed goat due to its high milk producing ability. The average milk produced per day by a goat is approximately 1.5liters. Altogether, 45 goats were distributed amongst which 40 were does and 5 bucks.

38 does given were pregnant and 2 does had newly born kids.

Annual Prize Distribution in TLC of Chib Sheikh:

On 18th February 2020 (Tuesday), students who cleared the final year examinations conducted under the supervision of NCHD in the OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Chib Sheikh were awarded with prizes by OSDI’s Team Leader (Lasbela) – Mr. Rashid Butt. Mr. Zahid Baloch – Deputy Director at NCHD was also present during the prize distribution ceremony.

12 highly capable achievers were awarded with 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions for securing the highest grades amongst their fellow class mates. TLC of Chib Sheikh which became functional in the year 2018 with students enrolled in KG and class I, has now upgraded itself till class 5. This is because of a migrated student who has enrolled in this TLC to complete the final year of his primary education. The remaining students of this TLC have been promoted twice based on their performance once by OSDI and later on by NCHD.

In a brief speech delivered by Mr. Butt during the prize distribution ceremony he acknowledged the efforts of the students, parents and teachers who took all pains to improve literacy. Adult Literacy Class (ALC) learners, School Management Committee (SMC) members and representatives of the community were also present to appreciate the achievers.

Sports Equipment Donated by NRSP:

OSDI received a generous donation of sports equipment from Mr. Arshad Iqbal (District Project Manager) at National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) on 15th February 2020, Saturday. These sports items were provided to facilitate the students of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Chamasara community.

On 17th February 2020 (Monday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt and Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed handed over these sports items to the TLC teacher and a School Management Committee (SMC) member. The sports items received from NRSP comprised of 1 football, 1 cricket bat and ball, 2 tennis balls, 2 jumping ropes and 50 slates with chalk to help the students improve their writing skills.

Currently, 41 students are acquiring education in this one classroom based TLC.

Students of TLC in Sayarani Goth sensitized for H&H:

On 12th February 2020 (Wednesday), OSDI’s Team Leader of District Lasbela (Baluchistan) – Mr. Rashid Butt along with Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed visited the Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Sayarani Goth to conduct health & hygiene awareness raising sessions. The aim of this campaign is to improve the student’s regularity to school and keep them healthy and strong.

Mr. Ahmed held two separate sessions in which 97 out of the 101 students were educated about how they could keep themselves safe from pesky germs that cause various illnesses. These health issues can also be contagious and affect other children. Cold, flu, Cough, throat infection and gastroenteritis are a few diseases which can be easily transferred from one child to another.

During the first session, 74 students from KG were informed about hygiene maintenance. Later on, 18 students of Grade I and 5 from Grade II were also educated about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene.

H&H Session conducted in Ishaq Goth:

In the newly constructed one classroom based NCHD Feeder School of Ishaq Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI has conducted a detailed session on the importance of safe health & hygiene (H&H) practices on 11th February 2020 (Monday). OSDI’s Team Leader of district Lasbela – Mr. Rashid Butt along with Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed and senior representatives of NCHD sensitized the students on cleanliness and hygiene maintenance.

Currently, 45 students are enrolled in this Feeder School of NCHD amongst which 35 students were present during the activity day. 1 out-of-school child (OOSC) attended the session along with 2 community adults.

Later on Mr. Butt, handed over a life saver jerry can to the class teacher for purification purpose of drinking water.

NCHD Feeder Schools constructed by OSDI:

OSDI and NCHD have been closely working together to bridge the gaps in the field of education in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) since the past 2 years. During the tenure of our partnership, OSDI has facilitated 12 NCHD Feeder Schools in various locations of district Lasbela either with construction and renovation or with provision of classroom furniture and other necessary requirements. On

4th February 2020 (Tuesday), completion of 3 NCHD Feeder Schools’ infrastructure was done with and handed over to the concerned authorities. Each of the facilities have one classroom. NCHD Feeder School located in Qadirdad community has approximately 75 students acquiring education and in Chaman Hotel’s vicinity 43 students are enrolled. Both these schools are situated in Bela city. 2 female teachers have been appointed in each of these schools to educate the students.

NCHD Feeder School in Ishaq Goth has nearly 45 students. The school is located in Utthal and only one female teacher has been appointed here to perform her duties.

Kashmir Solidarity Day Celebrated in Mardan:

In recognition of the freedom struggle exercised by the people of Kashmir, OSDI’s district team of Mardan participated in a solidarity walk organized by the district government on 5th February 2020 (Wednesday). The aim of this walk was to create awareness about the rights of people living in Kashmir.

Students of Government High School in Rustam city participated whole heartedly in this event which was well attended by senior government officials, academia, journalists, social sector representatives and others. Participants sang solidarity songs, delivered speeches and read poetry praising the efforts of the Kashmiri brethren.

A peaceful walk was also organized by Mr. Ashfaque Raza – Principal from the school to main chowk of Rustam city.

Kashmir Day Celebrated in Yaqoob Jokhio:

On 5th February 2020 (Wednesday), Team Leader of District Thatta – Mr. Usman organized a solidarity walk to show support for the suffering people of Kashmir. The walk started from OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Yaqoob Jokhio to the center point of the village. Students held placards with messages acknowledging the freedom struggle of their Kashmiri brethren. It was the first such event organized in this TLC.

Mr. Usman was also invited as a Guest of Honor in Degree College of Thatta on the same day. Youth marched from their college to Main Makli Chowk. The event was attended by senior government officials, representatives of social sector, academia, media and others.

Kashmir day is marked as a public holiday in Pakistan.

Formation of LDP Purchasing Committee:

On 10th February 2020 (Monday), OSDI’s Head of District in Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said formed a purchasing committee for the Livestock Development Project (LDP). One member from each of the four focused communities was nominated as a representative for the smooth execution of this project.

The 7th phase of LDP is soon expected to commence in the communities of Baizad Banda, Prrang Dara, Boday Qabar and Biroch. OSDI has selected 4 beneficiaries from Baizad Banda, 3 from Boday Qabar, 8 from Biroch and 5 from Prrang Dara villages.

Each beneficiary shall be facilitated with 2 pregnant does of local breed and 1 buck per community. As the number of beneficiaries is more in Biroch hence 2 bucks shall be given here.

GMC set-up in Pini Ladhoo:

In the community of Pini Ladhoo, OSDI has organized a one day General Medical Camp (GMC) on 31st January 2020 (Friday). The GMC was held in the one classroom based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) built by OSDI.

Nearly, 143 patients comprising of 95 females and 48 male patients were treated in this GMC. Moreover, all patients positively diagnosed with diseases were given free medicines. OSDI appointed one male and a female doctor to check the patients. The team of NRSP officials was also available to diagnose the patients against Malaria disease. Health Assistant of OSDI – Mr. Hassam trained 18 people at this GMC regarding safe health & hygiene (H&H) practices.

Manager Programs of OSDI – Mr. Sheheryar Khan personally visited this GMC and met the doctors and patients to know about the hurdles or major health issues within the vicinity.

Second Round of Urea Distribution in Lasbela:

For the 20 beneficiaries supported under the OSDI’s signature Agriculture Development Project (ADP) in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) to grow wheat on their farmlands were facilitated with the second round of Urea. The distribution was made on 30th January 2020 (Thursday).

Earlier the beneficiaries were provided with DAP fertilizers by OSDI in the initial phase; after which they were given urea fertilizer in the first round and now in the second and final phase the beneficiaries were once again given Urea fertilizer.

Manager Programs of OSDI – Mr. Sheheryar Khan met the beneficiaries of ADP, Livestock and School Management Committee (SMC) to discuss about the progress of their project and address their queries in case of need.

Hygiene awareness session in TLC of Chamasara:

On 29th January 2020 (Wednesday), OSDI’s field staff of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) conducted a training session on the importance of safe heath & hygiene practices (H&H). The training was held in OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Chamasara.

This one day training session was attended by 39 regular students of this TLC along with 5 unenrolled students and 3 community elders. Aim of this session was to sensitize the students about how they could improve their lifestyle having minimum resources.

OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz repeated the demonstration of proper hand wash technique along with other methods of safe health keeping in front of the students.

Training of Beneficiaries in LDP - Phase 3:

20 beneficiaries facilitated by OSDI under the Livestock Development Project (LDP) in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) were invited to attend a one day training program held on 29th January 2020 (Wednesday). During the third phase of LDP, OSDI has distributed 40 does and 10 bucks amongst the selected beneficiaries.

Dr. Kareem from the Veterinary Hospital of district Lasbela was appointed by OSDI to train and educate the beneficiaries on the best practices for livestock maintenance. He taught about shed maintenance and building, fodder preparation, health keeping, de-worming of livestock, benefits of vaccination and identification of diseases under the light of various symptoms.

Later on, Dr. Kareem addressed the questions shared by the LDP beneficiaries.

Maintenance of TLC in Sayarani Goth:

On 26th January 2020 (Sunday), the 5 School Management Committee (SMC) members of Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Sayarani Goth, district Lasbela (Baluchistan) purchased a cupboard and raw material for repair work of the entire infrastructure of the TLC.

The community of Sayarani Goth contributed in 50% of the overall maintenance cost and the remaining 50% was gathered by the SMC members. Altogether, a sum of PKR 6000-7000 was collected and spent. Due to the wall repairing the infrastructure of the TLC has become more durable and has strengthened further to sustain the severe weather conditions.

The same pattern of TLC maintenance and repairing has also been carried out in the TLC of Chib Sheikh community.

NCHD official visits Yaqoob Jokhio:

On 30th January 2020 (Thursday), Field Officer of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) – Mr. Abbas Memon visited the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). The purpose of this visit was to be well-informed about the interventions of OSDI. He was keen on observing the contribution of OSDI in the field of education.

Mr. Abbas visited the Temporary Learning Center (TLC) and met the students randomly. He checked the student registers and record of School Management Committee (SMC). Discussions regarding the overall classroom and school environment were made with the teachers and OSDI field staff. Mr. Muhammad Usman – Team Leader (TL) for district Thatta gave a detailed orientation on the ongoing and upcoming projects of OSDI within this community. Mr. Abbas was very pleased with the efforts of OSDI in helping to improve the literacy ratio of the community of Yaqoob Jokhio.

It was decided that he would visit the TLC on weekly basis for a few days and also conduct classes if feasible.

2nd Free GMC in Yaqoob Jokhio community:

Provision of primary health-care is the fundamental right of every individual. To help the suffering patients residing in the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh), OSDI organized a one day Free General Medical Camp (GMC) on 25th January 2020 (Saturday). It was the second Free GMC after OSDI’s intervention.

Altogether, 453 patients amongst which 140 were males and 313 females were thoroughly checked and examined by a qualified team of doctors and paramedical staff. OSDI appointed 2 male and 2 female doctors for this medical camp. Patients diagnosed with illnesses were facilitated with free medication by OSDI. 20 suspected patients were tested for Diabetes amongst these 6 affirmative patients were treated on spot and 3 critical patients were referred to Rural Health Center (RHC) for Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS).

OSDI’s Health Assistant – Mr. Hassam, educated 22 males regarding health & hygiene (H&H) awareness and in females section Dr. Rukhsana explained about the significance of safe health & hygiene (H&H) to 35 ladies.

Digging of Dumping Sites in District Thatta:

The community of Yaqoob Jokhio, a focused community of OSDI in district Thatta (Sindh) has initiated to dig dumping sites within their village to get rid of garbage. The cleaning activity has begun from 18th January 2020 (Saturday) as an after effect of the Broad Based Community Meeting (BBCM) held a day prior by OSDI’s Manager Programs.

In the initial phase of village cleaning, land would be dug by village males to dump the garbage. 10 key locations have been identified by OSDI’s team as digging sites considering the village population size. Amongst these, 4 dumping sites have been dug having an average size of 6ft (L) by 8ft (W). Once the dumping site would be filled then another location would be dug to dispose of the garbage.

OSDI has facilitated the community with a sweeper to clean the entire village once every week.

School Bags and Stationary Donated in TLC Pini Ladhoo:

In the recently built one classroom based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Pini Ladhoo in district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI donated school bags, copies and stationary items to the 32 students enrolled on 22nd January 2020 (Wednesday). Prior to OSDI’s intervention in this community the village was deprived of any educational facility.

After the distribution, Co-ordinator at UNICEF – Mr. Muneer Ahmed accompanied by Mr. Rashid Butt – OSDI’s Team Leader (Lasbela) conducted an interactive session on “Effective Learning Methods”. During this session, Mr. Ahmed engaged the students in various informal activities. Later on, Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed – Social Mobilizer of OSDI held an awareness session on the importance of health & hygiene (H&H).

Nearly, 30 students and 6 out-of-school children (OOSC) were sensitized in this session.

First Follow-up on BBCM in Yaqoob Jokhio community:

On 17th January 2020 (Friday), Manager Programs of OSDI – Mr. Sheheryar Khan visited the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). He met the entire community during the first follow–up on the Broad Based Community Meeting (BBCM) conducted on 6th December 2019. The aim of this meeting was to observe the mutual efforts of the community and OSDI which were taken to improve the living standards of the people.

He appreciated the community females for plastering the infrastructure of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) within their community and sending their children regularly to school. The extensive plantation within the village by the community males and their eagerness towards helping their fellow men was remarkable. It was emphasized that the digging work for the dumping sites should begin soon so the villagers could get rid of garbage easily.

Mr. Khan also made a transect walk across the community to visualize their water and sanitation issues. Simple and traditional methods were suggested to clean the hand pump areas to avoid spreading of mosquitoes.

Inauguration of TLC in Baizad Banda:

In the distant mountainous community of Baizad Banda in district Mardan (KPK), OSDI has constructed a two classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC). This TLC serves as the only educational facility available within this locality. The community has upto 80 out-of-school children (OOSC) whose future was at the verge of being in darkness due to illiteracy.

On 30th December 2019 (Monday), Manager Programs of OSDI – Mr. Sheheryar N. Khan inaugurated the OSDI’s newly built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Baizad Banda. OSDI’s field office representatives along with community adults and School Management Committee (SMC) members were also present during the inauguration ceremony.

Currently, the school has 59 students enrolled and are acquiring quality primary education. A teacher has also been appointed to initiate the learning process and conduct regular classes.

Life-Saver Jerry Cans Donated in NCHD Feeder Schools:

In the vulnerable communities of Tehsil Bela in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) are two NCHD Feeder Schools. One school is located in Qadirdad community and the other is near Chaman Hotel. Status of both these schools is functional. NCHD has appointed 2 female teachers in each of these schools.

On 16 January 2020 (Thursday), OSDI’s Team Leader (Lasbela) – Mr. Rashid Butt accompanied by senior officials of NCHD visited these schools. He donated 2 Life-saver Jerry Cans in the school of Qadirdad community which has more than 70 students acquiring primary education and 1 Life-saver Jerry Can in Chaman Hotel’s school where 40 students are being educated.

OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed conducted detailed health & hygiene (H&H) awareness raising sessions in both these schools. In the near future, OSDI shall build one classroom for each of these schools.

Initial Survey of Moza Deerja:

In the parameters of Union Council Kenhwari lies Moza Deerja in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). It comprises of 5 scattered communities. The area is extremely dry, barren and rocky. This revenue village is almost 25kms away from the city.

On 10th January 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s senior management accompanied by Ex-Counsellor of Deerja – Mr. Khalid visited this revenue village for an initial survey to check upon the vulnerability of the people. There are 58 households comprising of approximately 348 individuals. The villages are Khano Goth (17HH), Saleh Muhammad Goth (3 HH), Usman Goth (6 HH), Haji Muhammad Umer (7HH) and Muhammad Siddique Goth (25HH).

Upto 75% of the population depends on livestock rearing and the remaining people work as laborers on the mountains. There is no road available within this community. The village has a primary school in which NCHD has appointed a teacher but, the school lacks essential resources and basic facilities. There is a Basic Health Unit (BHU) in this revenue village and as per the community the doctor visits twice a week. However, the travelling distance between one village to another is very long and rough. Health, education, water and sanitation are the major issues faced by the people.

Handover of TLC Pini Ladhoo and Chamasara to NCHD:

On 10th January 2020 (Friday), OSDI formally handed over the Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) of Pini Ladhoo and Chamasara to its close ally National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). Both these TLCs are actively running.

On behalf of OSDI – Ms. Saira Rashid (Education Officer) signed the handing over documents whereas Mr. Zahid Baloch (Deputy Director) NCHD affirmatively accepted the responsibilities of both the TLCs. Last year, TLC of Chib Sheikh was also handed over to NCHD. During the meeting, OSDI’s Education Officer discussed about the construction of remaining schools as per the MoU signed between both the organizations.

Mr. Baloch suggested if OSDI could construct a school for the out-of-school children (OOSC) of Danook village. This scattered community lies near Mangyani Goth. Details regarding the Summer Camp were also discussed in which both the teachers of OSDI and NCHD could mutually participate and enhance their learnings. In the upcoming days, OSDI shall also pass the responsibility of TLC constructed in Sayarani Goth to NCHD.

Peer-to-Peer Learning Session conducted in Lasbela:

On 10th January 2020 (Friday), OSDI’s Education Officer – Ms. Saira Rashid organized a Peer-to-Peer learning session in the OSDI built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Sayarani Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). All 5 teachers of OSDI’s TLCs and Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed was invited to attend this learning session.

The teachers shared their experiences and learnings observed within the classroom environment. During the knowledge sharing discussions teachers exchanged information about the various techniques they applied in student counselling and classroom management. It was observed that teachers were facing difficulty in phonics, sentence structuring and translation of words from English language to the native dialect. Another area that required attention was the mental calculations especially of multiplication and division.

Upon conclusion of this one day activity it was decided that teachers would be provided elementary grammar books, dictionaries with translation and books for writing practices so they may overcome the difficulties faced in classroom. Moreover, Summer Camps would be initiated this year to engage the students in learning activities.

Meeting with Health officials in Thatta:

On 9th January 2020 (Thursday), OSDI’s Health Assistant – Mr. Hassam and Team Leader Thatta – Mr. Muhammad Usman met the senior health officials to explore opportunities of mutual interest for the vulnerable people. During the meeting Dr. Abdul Hakeem Khush – Focal Person of District Health Commission showed his support to facilitate OSDI with all possible resources to help lower the health issues within the focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio. He also confirmed their support for the Hepatitis Control & Prevention Program.

Dr. Khush appreciated the free General Medical Camps (GMCs) set up by OSDI in which patients are provided with free consultation and medications. He further asked OSDI’s team to meet Dr. Sania Abbasi – Women’s Medical Officer to update about the female health issues as the female population in this community is more as compared to males.

Dr. Sania gave her affirmation for availability of atleast 2 female doctors in the upcoming GMCs of OSDI. Both the senior doctors were presented with OSDI’s annual report and newsletters.

Upgrading students to Grade I:

Students of OSDI’s Built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the vulnerable community of Yaqoob Jokhio village of district Thatta (Sindh) were assessed during the monthly test taken on 10th January 2020 (Friday). Out of the 300 students enrolled in this educational facility only 40 proactive learners were selected to appear in this test. These students comprised of 21 boys and 19 girls.

The goal was to extract intellectual learners to nominate them for grade I. Amongst the achievers 27 students were selected from which 14 were boys and 13 were girls. The students were assessed for Maths, English, Sindhi and Urdu subjects. Prior to conducting this test the students were taught basic alphabets and counting of numbers for two months from the KG syllabus.

In the upcoming days, the 27 students selected shall be facilitated with syllabus of Grade I.

Community Females Plaster TLC in Yaqoob Jokhio:

OSDI constructed a 2 classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the vulnerable community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh) during the month of November 2019. To increase the durability of this TLC and protect it from severe weather conditions, OSDI’s Manager Programs – Mr. Sheheryar Khan suggested to plaster the entire infrastructure of the TLC.

Community females came forward along with the support of the School Management Committee (SMC) and OSDI’s district Thatta team to facilitate in this task by using the local plastering method. Locals use animal dung, clay and water to make a thick mixture which is applied on the desired area. After drying up, the area on which the plaster is applied becomes hard and gives a smooth look. The activity began from 4th (Saturday) – 6th (Monday) January 2020. So far, one classroom and front area of the TLC has been plastered. The size of each classroom is 20*16ft. From outside upto 4ft of the front area has being covered.

In about a week’s time the remaining classroom shall also be completed.

OSDI’s Teachers attend Adult Literacy Training:

Between 30th December 2019 (Monday) – 1st January 2020 (Wednesday) OSDI’s diligent teachers attended a 3 days training course in NCHD’s district Lasbela (Baluchistan) office. The training was attended by 2 teachers of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Sayarani Goth, 1 teacher from TLC of Pini Ladhoo and 1 teacher from TLC of Chamasara along with OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed.

The training was entitled as, “Basic Adult Literacy Training – II”. NCHD facilitated with Master Trainer - Mr. Najeeb Atta and his Assistant - Mr. Peer Bux. The participants were engaged in various formal and informal learning exercises meant for the adult learners which shall soon be enrolled in their TLCs.

At the end of the training the participants were awarded with certificates.

Phase 3 of LDP initiates in Lasbela:

On 23rd December 2019 (Monday), OSDI’s District Lasbela Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt had a detailed meeting with the 20 selected beneficiaries of Livestock Development Project (LDP). The meeting was held to acquaint the beneficiaries about the project’s working mechanism.

During this 3rd Phase of LDP, 17 beneficiaries have been selected from the revenue village of Chamasara which comprises of 5 scattered communities. These villages are Azam Goth, Sajan Goth, Shero Goth, Umer Goth and Long Goth. 3 beneficiaries belong to Kareer Goth, a distinct community located in the mountainous region. All beneficiaries chosen are daily wage laborers by profession.

On 30th (Monday) – 31st (Tuesday) December 2019, OSDI distributed 40 pregnant does and 10 bucks amongst the beneficiaries. Goats purchased during this phase are from Khuzdari breed.

Urea Bags Distributed in Lasbela:

20 beneficiaries of OSDI’s Agriculture Development Project (ADP) have been provided Urea bags on 28th December 2019 (Saturday). During the second phase of ADP in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) the 18 farmers of Sayarani Goth and 2 of Miru Suleiman Goth have chosen to grow wheat on their farmlands.

Each beneficiary has been facilitated with 3 urea bags to utilize it on their crops. 1 urea bag per acre shall be consumed. Urea is an organic fertilizer which helps in improving the quality of soil so the crop yields more.

After a duration of 2 weeks, urea bags shall once again be distributed.

2nd Free GMC in Chamasara:

On 27th December 2019 (Friday), OSDI organized a one day free General Medical Camp (GMC) in collaboration with the district health department and its ally National Rural Support Program (NRSP) at Behri Stop of revenue village Chamasara, U.C. Kehnwari, District Lasbela (Baluchistan). It is a rough and barren region with people living in at least 15 scattered communities. Previously, OSDI organized a free medical camp during the month of April 2019 in this village.

OSDI’s appointed doctors and paramedical staff provided free medical consultations to 271 patients amongst which 114 were males and 157 were female patients. Later on, each affirmative patient was facilitated with free medicines to recover from the illness. First time District Health Officer – Dr. Ahmad Ali personally checked patients in OSDI’s GMC. Moreover, 40 females and 18 males were sensitized by OSDI’s Social Mobilizers regarding safe health & hygiene practices.

The villagers were grateful to OSDI for organizing this GMC within their community.

Empowering people through education:

On 11th December 2019 (Wednesday), OSDI’s district head of Mardan (KPK) – Mr. Sajjad Said had a detailed meeting with the people of Biroch and Shanay Zangal to discuss about the closed Government Girls Primary Schools in both the communities. Mr. Sajjad guided the villagers of both these communities to approach the local government departments to re-open the closed girl’s schools in case they wanted their females to be educated.

The community had requested OSDI to initiate girl’s school in both these communities. Currently, the boys of Biroch community are acquiring education in the Government Boys Primary School of this village. But the girls’ school has been closed, since long. Mr. Said assured the villagers that in case the government required OSDI’s support for renovation and paint on the school’s infrastructure or teacher’s appointment then OSDI could facilitate.

Mr. Said has filed the case on behalf of the local community on Citizen’s Portal website and put up the case in front of the District Commissioner.

OSDI donates School Bags and Stationary Items:

On 24th December 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Manzoor handed over school bags and stationary items to the school teacher of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Chamasara community in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). These learning tools were provided to facilitate the 11 newly enrolled students of the TLC.

Before OSDI’s intervention in this community there was no educational facility available within the radius of 4-5kms. Due to the long travelling distance, parents refrained from sending their children to school and thus there was a very huge number of out-of-school children (OOSC).

Currently, 41 students are acquiring primary education within this TLC.

H&H Awareness Session in TLC of Yaqoob Jokhio:

To sensitize the students regarding safe health & hygiene practices in the focal community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). Team Leader of OSDI – Mr. Muhammad Usman along with the Social Mobilizer – Mr. Abbas conducted a detailed session on the importance of cleanliness in the OSDI’s recently built Temporary Learning Center (TLC).

The activity was carried out on 19th December 2019 (Thursday) in which nearly 100 students and 2 teachers participated. The students were motivated to wash their hands before and after every meal, brush their teeth daily, wear clean clothes, comb hair regularly and trim nails every week. OSDI’s team conducted question & answer sessions with the students to observe their understanding on the subject.

Students being the key influencers within a household and community shall attract more people towards accepting this positive social change and make it a part of their daily routine.

Mid-Term Exams conducted in Lasbela:

Students of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) residing in the scattered rural communities of Chamasara, Sayarani Goth and Pini Ladhoo in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) were assessed in the mid-term examinations. The exams commenced from 16th December 2019 (Monday) till 21st December 2019 (Saturday).

It was for the first time these students ever participated in mid-terms because OSDI intends to prepare the students for the annual exams. The attendance ratio of the students was nearly 99% across all the TLCs except the new admissions; as it will take some-time for these students to enhance their learning.

The teachers conduct surprise tests on regularly basis in all these TLCs to observe the subject understanding of the students. It is through these assessments that the confidence of the students shall increase and they can further be motivated to study.

OSDI Donates Medicines to DHO:

On 19th December 2019 (Thursday), OSDI donated medicines to the District Health Officer (DHO) of Lasbela (Baluchistan) – Dr. Ali Ahmad Baloch upon the request of the local government. The medicines have been donated to treat the patients suffering from Dengue and Malaria out-break which has resulted due to the massive rainfall in the region.

Patients from 4-5 far flung areas of Union Council (U.C.) Kehnwari shall benefit from these medicines where the district government is setting up mobile medical camps. The medicines given mostly comprise of anti-inflammatory syrups and tablets, anti-biotics, pain killers, multi-vitamins for adults and children.

The district government was grateful to OSDI for the generous amount of medicines provided.

OSDI team meets District Head of Hepatitis Dept:

On 20th December 2019 (Friday), OSDI’s Health Assistant along with Team Leader of district Thatta – Mr. Muhammad Usman met Dr. Mushtaq Memon – District Head for Hepatitis to explore opportunities for mutual co-operation. During the meeting, OSDI’s representatives appreciated the measures taken by the Government of Sindh for the control of this disease and facilitations for the patients under the Chief Minister’s Hepatitis Free Sindh Program.

Dr. Memon showed his complete support in conducting screening tests in the OSDI’s focused community of Yaqoob Jokhio. He assured that the government shall send paramedical staff to conduct the tests during the one day General Medical Camp (GMC) set up by OSDI in the upcoming days. Patients if diagnosed positive would be referred to the district government hospital and will also be provided free medication.

Efforts of OSDI to step forward and consider to work hand in hand with the district government were appreciated.

Physical exercise and curricular activities in TLC of Yaqoob Jokhio:

Physical health of the child is equally important like the mental health. To boost the morale of students and motivate them to regularly attend school, OSDI’s district Thatta Team Leader – Mr. Muhammad Usman conducted physical exercise and curricular activities in Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Yaqoob Jokhio Goth. The activity was carried out on 16th December 2019 (Monday).

All 300 students of this TLC in which 160 are female students and 140 are males were over-whelmed. The students for the first time participated in Physical Training exercises. Mr. Usman introduced the football and cricket games, held a running competition, formed a human train and made children play push and pull.

Later on, the students were asked various questions in the classroom related to general knowledge; to activate and improve their rapid thinking process.

Water Tank placed in Kareer Goth:

In the rocky and deserted region of union council Wayaro in district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI facilitated the 200 people living in nearly 15 households with provision of fresh water. A 160ft bore was drilled by the team of engineers to extract fresh water from the ground. Next, OSDI set-up solar panels and an electric motor to support the system. Approximately, 16,200 liters of water is being extracted per day from this facility. Earlier the villagers’ availed water from a water source formed as a result of rainfall located at a distance of half km. Upon drying out, females and children travelled atleast 4-5kms to fetch water from behind the mountains.

On 9th December 2019 (Monday), a plastic water storage tank was provided by OSDI having the capacity to store 6000 liters of water at a time. OSDI also constructed a cemented base for the storage tank to even the ground and protect it from being damaged. The amount of water extracted is more than the required quantity consumed or utilized by a person as per the global standards.

OSDI has further supported the villagers by initiating the kitchen garden project (K.G.) to ensure their food security.

First Malaria Training Held in Yaqoob Jokhio:

To improve the living conditions of the rural communities it is extremely important to empower and educate the people to break-away from the shackles of poverty. To overcome the gaps, OSDI conducts regular capacity building and awareness raising workshops and trainings within its focused rural communities along with its partner organizations; so the people get engaged and are motivated for change.

In the newly intervened community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh), OSDI conducted a one day awareness raising workshop under the Malaria Prevention and Control Program on 10th December 2019 (Tuesday). The training was held in collaboration with NCHD and NRSP attended by 30 male participants. The participants were informed about malaria and dengue virus and the precautionary measures that should be taken to avoid the spread of this disease. People were educated about the malaria and dengue symptoms and usage of medicine. NRSP had distributed net within the community as a safety measure for malaria, few days ago.

The trainers also emphasized to keep the surroundings clean in order to lower the risks of malaria mosquitoes.

First ADP Training of Phase II:

Beneficiaries of OSDI’s signature Agriculture Development Project (ADP) attended a one day training session held in the community of Sayarani Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) on 7th December 2019 (Saturday). The training was well attended by 17 farmers from the community. One farmer could not participate as he was not available in the village.

OSDI invited Mr. Qaiser Habib – Lecturer at Agriculture Department of Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS) to conduct the training session. Mr. Habib has previously delivered very informative sessions in the first phase of ADP. It was an interactive training session after which question & answers were entertained.

Demonstration on sowing technique and land preparation tips were also delivered to the farmers by the trainer.

Health & Hygiene Session conducted in Kareer Goth:

On 9th December 2019 (Monday), Mr. Rashid Butt – Team Leader of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) conducted an awareness session on the importance of health & hygiene in Kareer Goth. This scattered community is at a distance of almost 50 kms from the main road. It’s located on rocky, barren and rough mountainous region.

There are nearly 20 vulnerable households in this village. The training was attended by 20 children and 4 adults in which Mr. Butt gave a verbal lecture and engaged the learners in demonstration activity to learn the appropriate technique of hand-wash.

The children enjoyed this interactive mode of learning with bright smiling faces.

TLC constructed in Baizad Banda:

The community of Lower Baizad Banda is located in Union Council of Bazaar in district Mardan (KPK). It’s located in a mountainous region. The community comprises of more than 45 households. On 12th December 2019 (Thursday), OSDI has completed the construction of a 2 classrooms based cemented Temporary Learning Center (TLC) along with 2 washroom facilities for both boys and girls.

Approximately, 85 children reside in this village from which 81 are out-of-school children (OOSC) belonging to the age bracket of 5 - 12 years. Amongst these OOSC, 33 are girls and 48 are boys. Future of all these children was bleak as there was no educational facility available within this vicinity. It is expected that nearly 60 OOSC shall enroll in this school upon beginning. 2 male teachers have also been appointed to initiate regular classes.

OSDI has facilitated the TLC with classroom furniture such as teacher’s chairs (4), cupboard (1), dice (1), table (1), whiteboard 2*3inch (1), white boards (5), white board stands (3), buckets (2), water coolers (2), dustbins (5) and floor mats (10) along with stationary and few kitchen accessories.

OSDI participates in DEG meeting:

The government of Baluchistan is very keen on improving the educational standards and literacy rate of the province. To serve the purpose regular District Education Group (DEG) meetings are held to address the root causes that act as hurdles in achieving this task and discuss about the ongoing activities by various non-profit organizations.

On 5th December 2019 (Thursday), OSDI’s District Lasbela’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt attended a regular meeting held in the District Commissioner’s (D.C.) office. The meeting was chaired by Additional District Commissioner (ADC) – Mr. Farhan Ronjha. During the meeting, Mr. Ronjha asked OSDI to apply for NoC in other areas of Baluchistan to work towards the betterment of education and he shall completely support us for this cause.

The meeting was attended by various governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Phase 2 of ADP begins in district Lasbela:

On 4th December 2019 (Wednesday), OSDI’s signature poverty alleviation approach Livelihood Assistance Program’s (LAP’s) sub-scheme Agriculture Development Project (ADP) began in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). During this second phase, 20 vulnerable farmers have been selected to grow wheat on their farmlands.

18 beneficiaries have been nominated from various settlements of Sayarani Goth and 2 farmers have been taken from Miru Suleiman Goth. OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt conducted a meeting with all the beneficiaries after which they were facilitated with seeds and DAP fertilizers to begin the sowing process.

The farmers were grateful to OSDI for training them and providing them with high quality inputs to improve their crop yields.

Sports items Donated in TLC of Pini Ladhoo:

On 5th December 2019 (Thursday), OSDI donated sports items for the students of OSDI’s constructed single classroom based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the vulnerable community of Pini Ladhoo in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). From one generation to another none of the people living in this community have ever been to school.

Teacher of this TLC, Mr. Ghaffor received a tennis ball, a bat and 2 freezbies for the students of this educational facility from OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz. Moreover, 32 slates and 4 boxes of chalk were also provided to the class teacher for writing purposes.

Soon, course books and other stationary items shall also be donated.

Construction of TLC in Pini Ladhoo:

Nearly, 30-35kms away from Tehsil Utthal is a small scattered community of Pini Ladhoo. This little settlement is a part of revenue village Drabi in union council of Wayaro, district Lasbela (Baluchistan). Upon OSDI’s intervention in this community, the villagers asked for nothing more than facilitating their children with education.

More than poverty, the people were tired of illiteracy. OSDI appointed a teacher on emergency basis and initiated regular classes in the communal hall to save time. 33 out-of-school children (OOSC) from this community became regular students. On 1st December 2019 (Sunday), the construction of one classroom based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) was completed by OSDI.

Students have now been shifted to the newly built TLC and are now attending regular classes. Soon, the TLC shall be facilitated with other necessary equipment.

Manager Programs attends HRDN’s 20th AMM:

On 28th November 2019 (Thursday), OSDI’s Manager Programs – Mr. Sheheryar N. Khan attended the 20th Annual Members Meeting (AMM) of Human Resource Development Network (HRDN) in Islamabad. The event was hosted in Marquee Hall of Marriott Hotel.

Mr. Roomi S. Hayat (Chairperson HRDN) and Ms. Robeela Bangash (CEO HRDN) had invited Mr. Usman Dar (Special Assistant to Prime Minister) as a Chief Guest to honor the ceremony. The event focused on State of Youth in Pakistan having Youth Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) as a topic for discussion.

Mr. Majyd Aziz (President – Employer’s Federation of Pakistan), Mr. Zahoor Awan (General Secretary – Pakistan Worker’s Federation), Mr. Shahid Naeem (Head of SDG Unit – Government of Pakistan), Dr. Lubna Shahnaz (ILO Consultant), Ms. Ingrid Christensen (Country Director – ILO), Mr. Ignacio Artaza (Country Director – UNDP), Mr. Muzaffaruddin (GM – AKRSP) and Mr. Munir Ahmed (ED - DevCom Pakistan) participated in the event as speakers or panelists.

Free GMC set-up in Baizad Banda:

On 30th November 2019 (Saturday), a free General Medical Camp (GMC) was set-up in the deprived community of Baizad Banda by OSDI. The village is located in Union Council of Bazar in district Mardan (KPK).

During this one day medical camp free consultations and treatment along with free medicines were distributed amongst 250 ailing people as per the recommendation of the OSDI’s appointed doctor (Dr. Aftab Ahmed) and paramedical staff. Patients included 147 females and 103 males in which 13 were minor girls and 21 were young boys - below the age group of 5 years.

4 critical patients were referred to the Government Civil Hospital in Rustam and 1 patient was referred to Mardan Medical Complex.

Free GMC set-up in TLC of Sayarani Goth:

The community of Sayarani Goth has been chosen to become a ‘Model village’ under OSDI’s leadership. On 28th November 2019 (Thursday), a one day free General Medical Camp (GMC) was set-up by the Health team of OSDI along with the support of the local district health department.

Nearly, 511 patients were checked by OSDI’s appointed doctors and paramedical staff. The team of doctors comprised of 1 male and 2 females. Patients diagnosed with provisional illnesses were facilitated with free medicines by the health team of OSDI. 12 children were de-wormed with zyntel syrup and random diabetes tests were conducted of 5 suspected patients.

Later on, OSDI’s appointed Social mobilizers delivered awareness raising sessions on the importance of safe health & hygiene practices. These sessions were attended by 120 beneficiaries.

NRM initiated in District Thatta:


Plants are a vital part of our life. On 27th November 2019 (Wednesday), OSDI has started the first phase of its plantation campaign under the Natural Resource Management (NRM) project in the deprived rural community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh).

In the initial phase, 40 vulnerable households have been selected to participate in this project. Each family has been provided 2 neem trees and 1 jaman tree. The remaining trees have been planted in the OSDI’s constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in this community along with 50 Jantar/Dhaincha plants. OSDI’s community volunteers and NRM committee members distributed these plants amongst the beneficiary families and guided them to plant the trees in a straight line. Responsibility of watering the plants and taking care of them was voluntarily undertaken by the community females.

In the upcoming days, a variety of different plants such as Zuklis and Moringa shall also be provided to the villagers.

OSDI organizes Free GMC in Prrang Dara:


On 27th November 2019 (Wednesday), OSDI organized a free General Medical Camp (GMC) in the mountainous community of Prrang Dara in the communal hall of a local resident (Sher Aman Khan). This vulnerable village is located in Union Council Bazar of district Mardan (KPK).

OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said, had announcements made in the communities of Prrang Dara, Sherabad, Merzaki, Sadiqabad, Jalalabad, Sharmahan, Mayeen Hat and Babo Dara, a day prior to the activity so it could benefit more people. During this one day free GMC, 207 patients were facilitated with free medical check-up and health consultations. Free medicines were provided to the ailing people by OSDI’s appointed doctors and paramedical staff. 103 males and 104 females were treated against various diseases amongst which 10 were minor boys and 10 girls below the age bracket of 5 years. 3 critical patients were also referred to the Government Rustam Hospital by OSDI’s appointed Health team.

The community of Prrang Dara was extremely grateful to OSDI for extending its facilitations so far. It was the first free medical camp, ever set up in this village.

Health & Hygiene Session in TLC of Chamasara:


The community of Chamasara lies 30 – 35 kms away from Utthal city in district Lasbela of Baluchistan province. It’s a scattered population with approximately 43 households. People residing in this revenue village have never been to school.

Even though there are numerous small villages categorized under the revenue village of Chamasara but, OSDI’s keen focus is on facilitating 5 villages which are closely located. Two classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) has been constructed by OSDI in which regular classes are being held on daily basis. There are 40 students enrolled in this educational facility as of now.

On 27th November 2019 (Wednesday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt conducted a health & hygiene (H&H) awareness session in this school. The activity was attended by 37 students present on that day along with 5 out-of-school children (OOSC).

OSDI Donates Classroom Furniture in TLC Yaqoob Jokhio:


In the newly constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh), OSDI has donated classroom furniture on 25th November 2019 (Monday). Basic classroom equipment has been provided to facilitate the students and teachers in enhancing the learning process. As the TLC has started 2 weeks ago the student’s enrollment process is ongoing as of now.

Furniture given includes 2 tables for teachers, 2 wooden chairs, 8 floor mats, 2 white boards with stand, 2 water coolers, 2 steel glasses for drinking water and accessories for washroom. A signboard has also been provided to display the name of the TLC.

Classroom stationary and course books shall soon be donated in the upcoming days.

First Phase of SBDW in district Thatta:


In the newly intervened susceptible community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh), OSDI has recently constructed a 2 classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) for the 436 out-of-school children (OOSC) residing in this village.

On 19th November 2019 (Tuesday), the first phase of School Based De-Worming (SBDW) activity was initiated by the Health Assistant of OSDI – Mr. Hassam along with Mr. Muhammad Usman (Team Leader – Thatta). 140 students were facilitated with a single dose of zyntel syrup and facilitated with a 250ml milk pack. Later on, 225 more students were de-wormed on 25th November 2019 (Monday) making the total count of children de-wormed as 365.

Awareness sessions on the importance of safe health & hygiene practices were also informed to the students by the Team Leader of OSDI in District Thatta – Mr. M. Usman. It was for the very first time that these children were de-wormed or sensitized about the significance of healthy living.

First Term Exams Held in TLC of Arab Seray:


In January 2018, OSDI constructed a two classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the under-privileged rural community of Arab Seray, Union Council Bazar in district Mardan (KPK). Before OSDI’s intervention the community lacked any educational facility and the future of more than a 100 children was at stake.

As of now, 67 students are enrolled in this TLC because 4 students have migrated to Buner. To motivate and engage the students to compete with each other in studies OSDI started to hold regular assessments and examinations in this TLC, since November 2018. This year the First Term exams were scheduled from 11th (Monday) – 18th (Monday) November 2019 in which the students were assessed in various subjects.

English, Maths, General Knowledge, Social Studies, Islamic Studies and Pushto were the subjects for which the students were examined.

Students of TLC in Pini Ladhoo trained for H&H:


The community of Pini Ladhoo lies in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) nearly 30-35kms away from Tehsil Utthal. Prior to OSDI’s intervention in this village 41 children of this community were out-of-school from the age group of 4-10 years. None of the adults had ever been to school due to unavailability of educational facility.

Upon intervention, the villagers requested OSDI to facilitate them with nothing except education. OSDI approached NCHD to appoint a teacher on urgent basis to start school. The students were accommodated in the communal hall to safe time, before construction of a properly built Temporary Learning Center (TLC). On 21st November 2019 (Thursday), OSDI’s District Lasbela’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt delivered a lecture on safe health and hygiene practices to the 30 students present on the day. 6 out-of-school children along with 3 community members also attended the awareness session to learn about the importance of hand wash, bathing, etc.

After the session Mr. Butt provided the class teacher with a Lifesaver Jerrycan for the students to consume safe drinking water.

Health and Hygiene session in district Thatta:


On 14th November 2019 (Thursday), OSDI conducted health & hygiene awareness raising sessions in the vulnerable community of Yaqoob Jokhio Goth in district Thatta (Sindh). During the 2 training sessions nearly 106 male and female beneficiaries were educated by OSDI’s Health Assistant – Mr. Hassamuddin.

Every year, a large number of people die due to unhygienic living conditions and lack of awareness about sanitation. Through Health & Hygiene awareness raising sessions within the focused communities, OSDI sensitizes the people about various ways in which health can be maintained of the individual and the community, alike.

During these sessions beneficiaries are taught and given demonstrations about hand-washing technique, maintenance of oral & nails hygiene, regular bathing, discarding litter properly, etc. Beneficiaries are also guided about benefits of healthy eating habits and health hazards of substance abuse.

Health and Hygiene session in district Lasbela:


On 12th November 2019 (Tuesday), Health Assistant of OSDI – Mr. Hassam visited the under-privileged revenue village of Sayarani Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). Initially, the villagers informed OSDI’s field staff of district Lasbela about people rapidly falling ill. During primary investigation it was diagnosed that majority of the cases were Respiratory Tract Infection (RTI) or seasonal fever cases due to the cold weather.

Mr. Hassam along with OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz went to all the 6 scattered settlements of Sayarani Goth to meet the people one-on-one and brief them about various ways to keep safe from the cold weather and delivered sessions on the importance of safe health & hygiene. He also conducted a health & hygiene awareness session in the OSDI built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Sayarani Goth. 60 students attended this session.

29 male beneficiaries from Umrani Goth, Bilal Khaskheli Goth, Saleh Goth, Jumman Goth and Abdullah Stop were met and trained within their villages.

First Teacher’s Training Session in Thatta:


OSDI in co-ordination with its strong ally National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) conducted a one day teacher’s training workshop in the newly constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh) on 14th November 2019 (Thursday). The 2 male teachers appointed by OSDI for this school along with an additional teacher and 5 members of the School Management Committee (SMC) availed this training.

NCHD’s trainers – Mr. Imtiaz Samo and Mr. Asadullah Khushk educated the learners about various methods involved in classroom learning and how to motivate the students to enhance their learning process. The trainers also focused on exchange of knowledge with Adult Learners. Mr. Saqib – Additional Deputy Director of NCHD was also present during the training session. Later on, a brief session on the role and responsibilities of the School Management Committee (SMC) was also discussed.

TLC in Yaoob Jokhio shall be a source of imparting quality education to the 436 out-of-school children of this village and shall also help in knowledge sharing for the illiterate adults. Government Primary School in this village was non-functional ever since, its construction over 2 decades ago. The infrastructure of this building has deteriorated over the years and is no more reliable.

Phase 3 of K.G. begins in Lasbela:


In the focused communities of Kareer Goth, Miro Suleiman Goth, Bano Hussain Goth, Bohaar, Sayarani Goth, Saleh Goth, Bilal Khaskheli Goth, Jano Goth, Umrani Goth and Mangyani Goth of district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI has initiated the third phase of its Kitchen Garden Project (K.G.). Altogether, 38 beneficiaries have been selected to grow Spinach, Mustard, Reddish, Coriander and Luffa in their kitchen gardens.

Distribution of vegetable seeds along with DAP urea fertilizer was completed on 4th November 2019 (Monday). Through K.G. project the beneficiaries become food secure and are able to lower their monthly kitchen expenses upto PKR 2500 – PKR 3000 per month on the purchase of vegetables. In this manner, the beneficiaries are able to generate some savings every month.

The amount saved is later utilized in asset creation by the beneficiaries.

TLC constructed in Yaqoob Jokhio:


On 12th November 2019 (Tuesday), the construction work of OSDI’s Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh) was completed. The community has a registered Government Primary School (GPS) building which hasn’t been used or made functional ever since its construction due to the unavailability of a school teacher.

More than 430 school age going children residing in this community are out-of-school, currently. Only 3 children from this community were acquiring education from a school facility which was upto 4 – 5 kms away. OSDI has built a 2 classrooms based TLC along with separate washroom facilities for both boys and girls. 2 male teachers for this school have also been appointed by OSDI and enrollment of students shall begin from 18th November 2019 (Monday).

In the near future, OSDI shall facilitate the students with stationary items, school bags and course books.

Creating Ripples of Change through Education:


Following the guidelines set by the government’s Education Department in District Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI has been making keen efforts to uplift the educational standards, overcome illiteracy and improve the female literacy within its focused communities. Recently, OSDI has spread its wings to highlight the Adult Literacy Program to educate the vulnerable adult learners.

On 5th November 2019 (Tuesday), Education Officer of OSDI – Ms. Saira Rashid paid a visit to district Lasbela to observe the progress of teacher and students in OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Chamasara community and to conduct a Broad Based Community Meeting (BBCM) in TLC of Sayarani Goth before initiating the Adult Literacy Program. She also met the District Education Officer (DEO) - Mr. Ameer Bux for registration of students enrolled in OSDI built TLC’s and Training Co-ordinator at UNICEF-CPD - Mr. Muneer Ahmed to design a teacher’s training program for the capacity building of the teachers to improve their teaching performance for the betterment of students.

Mr. Bux assured his complete support in the registration process of students enrolled in OSDI built TLC’s in the nearest government education facility.

OSDI Participates in DEG Meeting in Lasbela:


On 5th November 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt of district Lasbela attended a meeting organized by the Honorable District Commissioner (D.C.) – Mr. Shabbir Mengal. It was a regular district group meeting which aimed to have an update from the social sector organizations working within the district to uplift the educational standards and overcome the illiteracy issues.

Mr. Mengal enquired from all the government departments and social sector organizations about the ongoing and upcoming activities in the field of education for district Lasbela. Mr. Butt informed the D.C. about the mutual collaboration between OSDI and its powerful ally National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) to increase the enrollment of all out-of-school children (OOSC) residing within the focused communities. Briefing on renovation of NCHD Feeder Schools, social mobilization and awareness creation activities with key focus on increasing female literacy and construction of Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) in deprived communities which previously had no educational facility available prior to OSDI’s intervention were updated.

Efforts of OSDI were appreciated by the government officials at all levels.

SMC & WMC Members Meet in District Mardan:


On 31st October 2019 (Thursday), Mr. Sajjad Said – Head of District Mardan (KPK) organized a meeting with the School Management Committee (SMC) and Water Management Committee (WMC) members of Baizad Banda and Boday Qabar villages. Mr. Said highlighted the committee members about their job responsibilities towards their respective projects.

From supervision of the project to ensuring its successful implementation was the key agenda of this meeting. SMC members were asked to work towards the enrollment of all out-of-school children (OOSC), specially focusing on creating awareness for female education and plantation of trees on massive scale. WMC members on the other hand were asked to look after the solar panels and water storage tank provided by OSDI. Mr. Said also asked the committee members to ensure monthly PKR 100 is collected per household for the repair of the water facility in case of any damage.

Both the committee members were also asked to organize monthly meetings and update OSDI about their performance.

Construction of TLC in Baizad Banda:


The community of Baizad Banda is located at a distance of approximately 4kms away from the main road. As it’s a mountainous region there is no infrastructure built. People have to travel on foot or animals to the cover the distance from one place to another. The nearest educational facility available is at almost 4-5kms away in Nakhtar Banda village.

Amongst the 86 children of this community, only 4 children are enrolled in Government Primary School (GPS) of Nakhtar Banda. OSDI chose to build a 2 classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in this community. The construction work has begun on 23rd October 2019 (Wednesday) along with the mutual support of the local community and consent of the district government. 2 washroom facilities are also begin built separately for both boys and girls.

The mobilization campaign to have all the out-of-school children (OOSC) enrolled shall begin upon completion of the construction work in a few days’ time.

K.G. initiates in Boday Qabar and Baizad Banda:


In the focused communities of Boday Qabar and Baizad Banda in district Mardan (KPK), OSDI has initiated the first phase of its Kitchen Garden Project (K.G.) on 26th October 2019 (Saturday). This project aims to create a food safety net around the susceptible households providing them an easy and free access to healthy and nutritious vegetables within their homes or nearby.

During this phase, 8 beneficiary families have been selected from the community of Baizad Banda and 13 beneficiaries have been chosen from Boday Qabar. Each beneficiary has received seeds of Spinach, Turnip, Radish, Garlic and Corriander alongwith a bag of DAC Fertilizer.

It is expected that more families shall start preparing kitchen gardens on their own once the gardens of OSDI beneficiaries start blooming.

Manager Programs visits Yaqoob Jokhio:


OSDI has recently initiated its intervention in the vulnerable communities of district Thatta (Sindh). To begin with, in the initial phase of launching our poverty alleviation strategies in the focused villages, OSDI has organized a Free General Medical Camp (GMC) in Yaqoob Jokhio community. To protect the upcoming generation from illiteracy a Temporary Learning Center (TLC) is being built by OSDI in this village; to have all the out-of-school children (OOSC) enrolled in school so they may acquire quality primary education. To ensure food security vegetable seeds are being sowed on various plots to prepare kitchen gardens.

In lieu of this, Manager Programs of OSDI – Mr. Sheheryar N. Khan on 18th October 2019 (Friday), visited the community of Yaqoob Jokhio to have a one to one discussion with the local people. Almost 140 villagers attended the meeting. Primary purpose of this meeting was to know about the basic problems being faced by the community members and how OSDI could play its role in resolving the issues. Moreover, boosting the morale of the community to proactively participate and engage in the capacity building and sustainability creation projects of OSDI was another objective.

Mr. Khan also informed about the financial empowerment program of OSDI i.e. Livelihood Assistance Program (LAP) under which opportunities for income generation would be provided to the deserving beneficiaries. LAP is scheduled to be initiated soon. Manager Programs motivated the villagers to work as partners with OSDI to help them improve their living standards and overcome poverty.

Distribution of School Equipment in NCHD Schools:


On 22nd October 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI fulfilled its commitment to facilitate the NCHD Feeder Schools in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). During this second phase of school equipment distribution, OSDI has provided 5 NCHD Feeder schools and 2 OSDI built Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) with tables, chairs, floor mats, white boards and water coolers.

Nearly, 351 students from the vulnerable communities of Gadani Mor (Moosa Hotel) (65), Mitha Sheikh (85), Pini Ladhoo (33), Chamasara (41), Chak Kaleri (28), Qazi Younusabad (47) and Muhammad Ali Colony (52) shall be able to study with ease. OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed handed over the school equipment to Mr. Zahid Baloch – Deputy Director at NCHD (Lasbela).

The equipment shall soon be delivered to the respective schools by NCHD.

K.G. Plots preparation in Yaqoob Jokhio:


Beginning from 14th (Monday) – 23rd (Wednesday) October 2019, OSDI has initiated the first phase of its Food Security Program in the vulnerable community of Yaqoob Jokhio in district Thatta (Sindh). During this phase, 52 beneficiaries have been selected to participate in the Kitchen Garden Project (K.G.). The size of each K.G. plot is 20*20 sq. ft.

Plots preparation are being done on two levels: 1) Household Level and 2) Communal Level. Four types of vegetables per beneficiary have being distributed. Prior to project implementation Team Leader of Thatta – Mr. Muhammad Usman educated the beneficiaries about best land preparation and sowing practices via a demo.

Beneficiaries have been taught about plot measurement, land levelling, boundary preparation, watering line, usage of natural fertilizer before cultivation and seed sowing methods. The monthly kitchen expenses of each beneficiary household shall lower at least PKR 2500 – PKR 3000 on an average by accessing fresh vegetables from their kitchen gardens rather than purchasing them from the market. This way the monthly savings of each family shall increase thus creating sustainability.

Water Tanks in Baizad Banda and Boday Qabar:


In the rocky and mountainous communities of Baizad Banda 1, Baizad Banda 2 and Boday Qabar, OSDI has drilled bore and provided solar panels to extract ground water. 3 solar water facilities have been provided in these communities of district Mardan (KPK).

35 households comprising of 245 people reside in Baizad Banda 1 and in Baizad Banda 2 there are 12 households with a population size of 84 people. In Boday Qabar village there are 30 families comprising of 210 people. The cemented water storage tanks provided by OSDI in the communities of Baizad Banda 1 and Boday Qabar have the capacity to store 11,080 liters of water. On 15th October 2019 (Tuesday), the Water Management Committee members of both the regions utilized their share by having the cemented water storage tanks painted with OSDI logo and project details. The villagers are very grateful for this easy to access fresh water facility within their communities by OSDI.

In the community of Baizad Banda 2, OSDI has facilitated with a solar powered DC Pump.

SBDW - Phase 6 in district Mardan:


In the rough and mountainous region of district Mardan (KPK), OSDI initiated the 6th Phase of School Based De-Worming Project (SBDW). The two days activity was carried out in 3 government schools facilitating 530 students.

On 16th October 2019 (Wednesday), OSDI’s district Mardan team visited Government Primary School in village Nakhtar Banda to educate and guide the 140 students about safe health & hygiene (H&H) practices. Each student was provided with a dose of zyntel syrup (a de-worming medicine) and a 250ml of milk pack.

Next day, Mr. Zubair the health dispenser visited two more schools i.e. Government Primary School in Sherabad (130) and Government Primary School in Biroch (260) along with the OSDI’s Social Mobilizer to de-worm the students. Later on, H&H sessions were also delivered by the health dispenser.

SBDW - Phase 3 in district Lasbela:


The third phase of OSDI’s School Based De-Worming Project (SBDW), was initiated in the newly constructed Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) of Chamasara, Sayarani Goth and Pini Ladhoo from 14th (Monday) – 15th (Tuesday) October 2019 in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). During this two days activity, nearly 163 students were de-wormed by OSDI’s health team.

The students were also briefed on the importance of health and hygiene in order to live a healthy life. As it was the first time such an activity had taken place in these schools the children thoroughly enjoyed the learning session. Social Mobilizers of OSDI also demonstrated the hand wash and brushing of teeth technique to the students.

Each students was facilitated with a 250ml of milk pack and biscuits after the session.

Renovation of NCHD Feeder School in Mitha Sheikh:


The community of Mitha Sheikh is located in the revenue village of Kehnwari in Union Council Kehnwari, in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). The village comprises of more than 60 households. This scattered community is at a distance of 1-2kms away from the main road.

On 15th October 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI completed the renovation work at NCHD Girls Feeder School of this community. The one classroom based school has above 70 girls enrolled. This school required urgent repair and renovation of the 37*26 ft classroom and main corridor. OSDI took upon the challenge to level the cemented flooring, amend the classroom window and repair the ceiling.

The community stepped forward with their share by having the entire infrastructure painted. OSDI shall further facilitate the school with basic equipment for the classroom.

Construction of NCHD Girls’ Feeder School:


As per the MoU signed between both OSDI and NCHD during the month of May 2019, OSDI has once again fulfilled its commitment to construct a Girls Feeder School in the susceptible community of Janu Goth, revenue village Chak Kaleri, Union Council Wayaro in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) on 10th October 2019 (Thursday).

The school has nearly 35 students acquiring quality education as of now. As per the current requirement OSDI has built a one classroom based school in this community. The number of enrollments is expected to grow after the regularization of classes and few community mobilization sessions.

In the near future, the school shall be facilitated with basic educational equipment by OSDI.

First GMC in Yaqoob Jokhio Goth:


OSDI has recently intervened in the vulnerable communities of district Thatta (Sindh). Rural areas which had long been neglected are now being pushed towards the path of progress along with the support of the local government in this district.

On 12th October 2019 (Saturday), OSDI conducted the first Free General Medical Camp (GMC) in the community of Yaqoob Jokhio. During this one day medical camp nearly 515 male and female patients were checked and treated by qualified doctors. Majority of the ailing females complained of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), Anemia, Gastro Tract Infection (GIT) and General Weakness; whereas, male patients mainly suffered from Respiratory Tract Infection (RTI), Skin Infections and Chikungunya (Fever). Ear infection was a common problem in most of the child patients.

People diagnosed with health issues were facilitated with free medication by OSDI. Nearly, 190 people were educated regarding the importance of health & hygiene. OSDI’s Social Mobilizers shared suitable tips and counselled the audience for safe hygiene practices to live a healthy life. Later on, biscuits were distributed amongst children.

First H&H awareness session in TLC of Pini Ladhoo:


The community of Pini Ladhoo in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) has been illiterate since forever, people residing in this village have never been to school. On 8th October 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI conducted the first Health & Hygiene awareness session in its Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of this village.

Amongst the 33 students enrolled in this school, 30 students were present on the activity day. Nearly, 10 out-of-school children (OOSC) also attended the H&H training session to learn about the basic techniques involved in keeping oneself and the environment clean.

OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed conducted the training in which he informed the students on how to wash their hands, brush their teeth, bathe daily, trim their nails every week, etc. The children thoroughly enjoyed this learning session after which every child received a packet of wafers.

Teacher’s Day Celebrated in Sayarani Goth:


“A Teacher is a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge and wisdom”, Ever Garrison says. On 5th October 2019, OSDI celebrated the World Teacher’s Day across all its initiated and supported schools in district Lasbela (Baluchistan).

This day is celebrated to highlight the importance of a teacher and honor them for their services in contributing towards the growth and development of their students. A teacher’s role in helping his/her student to explore the various dimensions of knowledge can never be forgotten.

Students of Sayarani Goth, a little scattered village in which OSDI has recently constructed a Temporary Learning Center (TLC), created beautiful cards to acknowledge the efforts of their teachers. Moreover, OSDI’s Team Leader (Lasbela) – Mr. Rashid Butt gave pens to teachers as a little gift of appreciation. As it was a first time such an activity was witnessed by the students of this school they enjoyed the day thoroughly.

OSDI team meets DHO and Social Welfare Department officials:


On 19th September 2019 (Thursday), OSDI’s representatives Mr. Babar Junaid, Mr. M. Usman and Mr. Hassam met the District Health Officer of Thatta (Sindh) – Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Memon to discuss about mutual opportunities for collaboration. The meeting began with a brief introduction about OSDI and how it facilitated the under-privileged rural communities with free medical assistance under its Health-care project.

Dr. Memon assured his complete support and co-operation in all health-care projects. He also appreciated the efforts of OSDI for choosing district Thatta for intervention in order to create sustainability within this region.

On the same day, Mr. Khuda Bux Behrani – Deputy Director and Ms. Mahreen Iqbal Soomro – Assistant Director at Social Welfare Department were also met by OSDI’s officials. It was concluded that OSDI shall work in close co-ordination with the Social Welfare department and district government to help alleviate poverty in district Thatta (Sindh).

Students Trained for H&H in Lasbela District:


Field staff of OSDI trained the students of 4 vulnerable schools in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) on 24th September 2019 (Tuesday). The sessions were conducted by OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed. Deputy Director of NCHD – Mr. Zahid Baloch accompanied by Mr. Rashid Butt – Team Leader of District Lasbela also attended the event.

Altogether, 645 students from Government Boys Primary School in Kehnwari (110), NCHD Feeder School in Mitha Sheikh community (85), Government Boys Middle School in Sukkan (170) and Government Boys Middle School in Ahora (280) were educated on safe health & hygiene practices.

At the end of the training session biscuits and wafers were distributed amongst the students.

H&H training session for Adult Literacy Class Students:


In the OSDI’s constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Chib Sheikh, in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) students of Adult Literacy Program were engaged in a one day training session to learn about the importance of health & hygiene on 16th September 2019 (Monday). This session was conducted by OSDI’s Social Mobilizer of district Lasbela – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed.

All the 13 Adult Literacy Program students attended this training session. Mr. Ahmed informed the students about various practices and techniques involved in the hygiene maintenance and how it could help them in lowering the chances for being exposed to different contagious and non-contagious diseases. He educated the students about how they could protect themselves and their families from falling ill. He also informed the learners about the side effects of ghutka, betelnut and tobacco consumption.

Later on, Mr. Ahmed conducted a question and answer session to address the issues being faced by the Adult Learners with regards to safe health & hygiene.

H&H Awareness Sessions in Arab Seray and Saeedabad schools:


In the Government Girls Primary School (GGPS) of Saeedabad, in district Mardan (KPK); OSDI organized a one day training session for the female students on 25th September 2019 (Wednesday). Ms. Razia Bibi, a Lady Health Worker (LHW) conducted the awareness session in which nearly, 204 female students were trained about the various practices involved in maintaining personal hygiene. She also briefed the female students on effects of environmental hygiene on their health. Special focus was made on educating the students to keep their kitchens and homes clean.

70 students of OSDI’s constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Arab Seray were trained on 27th September 2019 (Friday) by the field staff of district Mardan. The students were taught about the basic health & hygiene practices that if taken care of could lead to a healthier living.

At the end of the training sessions the students were facilitated with biscuits, wafers and flavored tea bags by OSDI’s district Mardan team.

 

Founder Trustee’s Second Visit to District Lasbela:


On 28th September 2019 (Saturday), the Founder Trustee of OSDI – Mr. Aasim A. Siddiqui accompanied by senior officials of Marine Group of Companies visited the under-privileged rural communities of district Lasbela. It was his second visit to the district since OSDI’s intervention in 2017.

In the first phase of this visit, Mr. Siddiqui met the beneficiaries of agro, livestock, small rural enterprise, health-care, kitchen gardening and water management projects. Altogether, 80 beneficiaries from 8 settlements of Sayarani Goth; besides Mangyani Goth, Kareer Goth, Bohaar, Faqeera Goth, Pini Ladhoo Goth and Chamasara communities had a chance to directly interact with Mr. Siddiqui. Founder Trustee also met the students of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Sayarani Goth and students of TLC in Chib Sheikh. As a goodwill gesture community elders crowned Mr. Siddique with their traditional Turban.

Next, the Founder Trustee visited the Frontier Constabulary Public School in Bela to inaugurate the OSDI’s constructed Examination Hall where he was invited as a Chief Guest. Mr. Siddiqui was warmly received by Wing Commander Col. Jamshed. Students and school’s management of FCPS in Bela whole-heartedly thanked OSDI for extending its support in promoting the cause of education.

Upon reaching the far fledged rural community of Miru Suleiman, Mr. Siddiqui met the beneficiaries of Miru Suleiman Goth, Bano Hussain Goth and Muhammad Bux Goth. Here too, he enquired about the before and after difference in income generation and sustainability creation in the lives of these beneficiaries after OSDI’s interventions within their communities.

 

Health & Hygiene Awareness Sessions in District Mardan:


In the OSDI supported schools of district Mardan (KPK), health & hygiene (H&H) awareness session were conducted under the supervision of the Head of District (Mardan) - Mr. Sajjad Said by the OSDI’s Field Assistant – Mr. Ibrar Ali. The activity took place between 18th – 20th September 2019 (Wednesday - Friday), in which students from 4 schools were trained.

OSDI conducted the awareness sessions in Government Primary School in Surkhabi village, Faiz ul Islam School in Rustam, Government Primary School in Nakhtar Banda and Government Primary School in Sherabad community. Altogether, 724 students were informed about the benefits of safe H&H practices on their lives and surroundings. OSDI’s field staff distributed health pamphlets amongst the students which showed illustrations of maintaining personal hygiene.

Later on, biscuits, wafers and tea sachets were distributed amongst the students.

 

OSDI participates in 54th Defence Day celebrations:


Celebrating the Youm-e-Difa or Defence Day of Pakistan, OSDI’s district Lasbela Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt along with the Education Officer – Ms. Saira Rashid attended the event organized by the management of Frontier Constabulary Public School in Bela (Baluchistan). The event was held on 6th September 2019 (Friday) at the newly constructed OSDI’s Examination Hall of FCPS.

More than 150 students and dignitaries attended the function. Students sang songs, delivered speeches, acted on tableaus and read poetry in praise of the Martyrs who sacrificed their lives while safeguarding the motherland. Special prayers were made for the prosperity and safety of the Kashmiri brethren.

At the end of the ceremony, wafers provided by OSDI were distributed amongst all the students.

 

Health & Hygiene Awareness Session in GBPS Bocheri:


On 14th September 2019 (Saturday), OSDI’s field team of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) conducted an awareness session for safe health & hygiene practices in the Government Boys Primary School of Bocheri community. All 117 students were present during the activity day amongst which 21 students are yet to be enrolled.

In the 2 hours training session the students were briefed about the various practices to maintain their personal and environmental hygiene. Special emphasis was made on the necessity for hand-wash before and after every meal. OSDI’s field staff gave demonstrations on how to cleanse the hands thoroughly.

OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Manzoor educated the students how they could keep themselves safe from various illnesses and diseases. Biscuits were distributed to the students after the activity.

 

72nd Independence Day Celebrations in TLC Chib Sheikh:


On 5th September 2019 (Thursday), OSDI’s Team Leader (District Lasbela) – Mr. Rashid Butt visited the OSDI constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Chib Sheikh community to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day of Pakistan. The event was graced by Mr. Muhammad Khan (Ex-Counsellor) of this village as a Chief Guest.

Members of the School Management Committee (SMC) and community elders also attended the celebration along with the TLC students. The villagers appreciated the continuous efforts of OSDI in contributing towards eradication of illiteracy within their community. Mr. Butt while addressing the gathering highlighted the issues of absenteeism and irregularity of few students in daily classes. He also motivated and pledged the community members to have the remaining out-of-school children (OOSC) enrolled in school as soon as possible and invited people to attend the Adult Literacy classes (ALC) to improve the literacy of not only minors but also elders specifically the youth.

Students who read qiraat, delivered speeches and sang songs were awarded with cash prizes by Mr. Butt. Biscuits, Independence Day badges and hand bands were also distributed by OSDI amongst the audience after the ceremony.

 

H&H session and Distribution of Sandals in TLC of Chamasara:


On 24th August 2019 (Saturday), OSDI’s District Lasbela Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt along with Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed - Social Mobilizer conducted sessions on the importance of Health & Hygiene (H&H) in the OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Chamasara in U.C. Kehnwari, District Lasbela (Baluchistan). The total strength of students enrolled in this school are 43.

Mr. Sheeraz delivered thorough sessions on the necessity for personal and environmental hygiene. The students were taught about basic tips to maintain hygiene such as bathing, teeth brushing, combing hair, washing hands, discarding litters properly, etc. Later on, the students were also engaged in the hand washing activity.

At the end of the activity, Mr. Butt distributed cream biscuits and Independence Day badges to the students. Furthermore, the students were also provided sandals to keep their feet safe from the scorching heat.

 

Independence Day celebrated in GBHS Wayaro & FCPS Bela:


In district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI celebrated the 72nd Independence Day on 10th August 2019 (Saturday) in its supported Government Boys High School in Wayaro. The school is located in Tehsil Utthal in which nearly 450 students are enrolled. It’s for the third consecutive year that OSDI has participated in the Independence Day celebrations.

Every year the students deliver motivational speeches, sing songs, play tableaus and recite poems, etc. demonstrating their love and respect for the motherland. Successful achievers are awarded with gifts and cash prizes by the District Lasbela team of OSDI. This year, OSDI distributed cream biscuits along with Independence Day badges to the students.

Frontier Constabulary Public School in Bela, also celebrated the Independence Day on the very same day. Biscuits distributed by OSDI were provided to the students by the school’s administration. The management was grateful for the kind gesture and thanked OSDI for bringing smiles on the faces of young angels.

 

OSDI Participates in Independence Day Walk organized in District Mardan:


The 72nd Independence Day of Pakistan was celebrated with great zest and zeal in the focused Tehsil of Rustam in district Mardan (KPK). On 14th August 2019 (Wednesday), the senior government officials, community members and adults, educationists, social sector representatives, etc. gathered to walk from Tehsil Rustam office to the Main Chowk of Rustam under the leadership of Additional Assistant Commissioner – Mr. Fawad Khattak to demonstrate solidarity with the Kashmiri brethren.

People held placards and banners requesting the stakeholders for immediate resolution of the issue. Speeches were delivered by Mr. Khattak, Mr. Ishaq Khan – District member, Ex- Nazim – Mr. Sajjad Said, Tehsil member – Mr. Mumtaz Ali and Qari Fateh Bari. The speakers spoke about being blessed to live an independent state and live as per their desire. OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Said said, “Pakistan is a truly blessed country which has been bestowed with kind hearted people and glorious places to visit. He further emphasized on the need for unity and togetherness to stand against all odds.”

At the end of the walk, people prayed that Muslims across the globe live with peace and prosperity.

 

H&H activity in TLC of Sayarani Goth & Girls Feeder School in Sain Goth:


On 17th August 2019 (Saturday), OSDI’s Team Leader of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) accompanied by Mr. Zahid Baloch – Deputy Director (NCHD) and Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed visited the OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Sayarani Goth and on 20th August 2019 (Tuesday) the same team visited the NCHD’s built Girls Feeder School in Sain Goth, near Moosa Hotel in Tehsil Gaddani.

The purpose of these visits was to deliver awareness raising sessions to the school children about the benefits of safe health & hygiene practices in their daily lives. The students were engaged into various interactive activities by the representatives of both the organizations. Demonstrations on proper method of hand washing was briefed to the students by Mr. Sheeraz.

Currently, there are 43 students enrolled in the Girls Feeder School of Sain Goth and 80 students are acquiring quality primary education in TLC of Sayarani Goth. After the awareness sessions each student was facilitated with a box of chocolate biscuits consisting of 12 packs. 2 Jerry cans were also provided in the TLC of Sayarani Goth by OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt.

 

First Phase of Health & Hygiene Awareness sessions:


In the newly intervened district of Thatta (Sindh), OSDI has successfully conducted the first phase of health & hygiene (H&H) awareness raising sessions between the 5th - 7th August 2019 (Monday – Wednesday). The activity was carried out in the susceptible rural communities of Wali Muhammad Pitafi Goth, Yaqoob Jokhio Goth and Babu Mallah Goth.

OSDI’s Team Leader (Thatta) – Mr. Muhammad Usman, Health Assistant – Mr. Hassamuddin and Health Facilitator – Ms. Marina Palejo educated nearly 414 people (men, women and children) living in these under-privileged communities. Knowledge was shared on the necessity of including safe health & hygiene practices in their lives. They emphasized on the importance of personal and environmental hygiene. Besides providing the Information, Communication & Education (ICE) material to the audience the learners were also shown demonstrations to enhance their learning process by Learning by Doing method.

Community females were informed that if they wash their hands properly before touching a new born they can massively contribute towards lowering the risks of child morbidity or mortality. Washing kitchen utensils properly would help them lower the risks of diarrhea especially in the minors. Males were educated about the side effects of Gutka, betel nut and cigarette smoking on their health. Children were also shown a cartoon on “Meena” to imitate the hand-wash technique. Later on, all the participants were provided with biscuits and boxes of flavored tea bags as take away souvenirs.

 

Meeting with WHO official in District Thatta:


OSDI’s Team Leader for district Thatta – Mr. Muhammad Usman along with the Health Assistant – Mr. Hassamuddin met the Admin Program - Data representative at World Health Organization (WHO) Mr. Chetan. The meeting took place on 7th August 2019 (Wednesday) in which details of the activities of OSDI were briefed and opportunities of mutual interest were explored between representatives of both the organizations.

Mr. Chetan extended his support by assuring to team up for the arrangement of doctors and paramedical staff during the Free General Medical Camps (GMCs) organized by OSDI within its focused communities of district Thatta (Sindh). He also appreciated the efforts of OSDI in conducting health & hygiene awareness sessions within the deprived communities to educate the people about healthy living practices and assured his complete support to further the cause.

Moreover, Mr. Chetan also discussed about opportunities to collaborate for EPI and Polio vaccination programs within the district.

 

Inauguration of Temporary Learning Center in Sayarani Goth:


On 9th August 2019 (Friday), the two classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) was formally inaugurated in the deprived rural community of Sayarani Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). OSDI constructed this school along with a washroom facility for students to have all the out-of-school children (OOSC) enrolled to acquire primary education. Future of nearly 150 OOSC was at stake due to no school available within the radius of upto 4kms of this community.

OSDI initiated regular classes in this educational facility from 22nd April 2019 with only a handful of students. Gradually, the number of students kept increasing day by day as the parents and community adults were mobilized to educate their children. Currently, the strength of students has significantly raised up to 136.

As the Independence Day celebrations neared, OSDI organized a formal inauguration ceremony in this school by inviting the senior government officials and dignitaries to witness the efforts of our team. Mr. Ameer Buksh (DEO – Lasbela) was the chief guest at this event. Moreover, the event was also graced by Mr. Naveed Hashmi (DOE - Male), DDEO – Mrs. Shahida Ali, Mr. Zahid Baloch – Deputy Director (NCHD) and his team mates Ms. Khairunissa and Mr. Rafiq Baloch. Mr. Arshad Iqbal – DPM (NRSP) and Mr. Hafeez. Members of Social Welfare Department of Lasbela – Mr. Aqeel Qamar and Mr. Ather from EMIS were also present during the ceremony.

On behalf of OSDI, each student was given an Independence Day badge and school bag along with notebooks for English and Urdu subjects. Specially designed stationary pouches were also given to the students which consisted of 2 pencils, 2 erasers, a ruler and a sharpener.

 

Construction of Water Storage Tank in Baizad Banda:


In the mountainous region of district Mardan (KPK), lies a small community of Baizad Banda. This village comprises of nearly 30 households. Prior to OSDI’s intervention in this susceptible village the people availed water from a natural spring nearby; however, the water obtained was insufficient to full fill their daily water requirement. Last month, OSDI initiated to do bore in this community after which solar panels were fixed to extract water.

Upon completion of this task, a cemented water storage tank was required to store water for later use. For this purpose, OSDI’s appointed contractor constructed the water storage tank that has the capability to accommodate 11,080 liters of water at a time. Construction work was completed on 12th August 2019 (Monday).

People of Baizad Banda community are extremely grateful to OSDI for extending its facilitations; soon the cemented water storage tank of Boday Qabar shall also be completed.

 

Course Books Distributed in OSDI TLCs:


Earlier this year, OSDI received course books from the District Education Office of Lasbela, Baluchistan province for its students. These books have been distributed in the OSDI’s recently built Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) of Sayarani Goth, Pini Ladhoo Goth and Chamasara on 29th July 2019 (Monday).

None of these communities had any educational facility prior to OSDI’s intervention. Due to our aggressive efforts nearly 117 out-of-school children (OOSC) have been enrolled in these schools. The number of enrollments is still expected to increase with the passage of time.

Few books have also been donated by OSDI’s close partner National Commission for Human Development (NCHD).

 

Plantation drive in TLC Sayarani:


OSDI received a generous donation of 100 plants from Hingol National Park (HNP), last month. Utilizing the entire donation received 80 plants have been sowed in the newly constructed Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Sayarani Goth on 3rd July 2019 (Saturday). Two sides fencing has been created by the District Team Leader (Lasbela) – Mr. Rashid Butt on left and right hand sides of the TLC. Shady trees have been planted in these fences so they may provide some natural cooling effect upon growing.

Besides this, conocarpus and some flowering plants have been used inside the boundaries of the bamboo fence for beautification purposes. Mr. Ghulam Hussain – K.G. teacher at this TLC assisted the OSDI team during the plantation activity.

The remaining 20 plants shall be donated to beautify the newly constructed place of worship – masjid of this community.

 

Sports Equipment Donated at TLC Sayarani:


On 5th July 2019 (Monday), OSDI’s Social Mobilizer – Mr. Sheeraz Manzoor handed over the sports items donated by Mr. Arshad Iqbal – District Program Manager at National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) to Mr. Ghulam Hussain and Mr. Rehmatullah. Both the gentlemen are teachers at OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Sayarani Goth.

This 2 classrooms based educational facility was constructed in the month of April 2019. Currently, there are 58 students enrolled in this school which is expected to increase in the coming days. Sports items donated by NRSP include 2 bats, tennis balls, football, 2 jumping ropes and 2 frizz bees. Moreover, 2 boxes of ink and few slates are also given by OSDI’s ally.

Both the OSDI teachers were grateful to NRSP for the kind donation as it will help in promoting physical education amongst the students and aid in classroom learning.

 

Health & Hygiene Awareness Session in District Lasbela:


OSDI conducted a two days health & hygiene awareness session within its focused communities of district Lasbela (Baluchistan) on 30th (Tuesday) and 31st (Wednesday) July 2019. Altogether, 4 sessions were carried out in Sayarani Goth, Bilal Khaskheli Goth, Saleh Goth and Chamasara communities. The Health Assistant at OSDI – Mr. Hassamuddin along with the support of the District Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt and Mr. Sheeraz Manzoor – Social Mobilizer delivered the awareness raising sessions in all these communities.

45 young men, women and village elders were trained during the 2 days activity in which the audience was briefed about the importance of safe health and hygiene and how if little things are taken care of can bring about a positive change in their lives. The participants were motivated to maintain their personal and environmental hygiene by bathing daily, brush teeth twice a day, trim nails every week, wear clean clothes daily and ensure their kitchen utensils are clean, etc.

Besides this, the young men were also informed about the health hazards of using gutka and tobacco. The villagers appreciated the efforts of OSDI’s team in educating them about the benefits of healthy living.

 

OSDI participates in District Education Group meeting:


On 30th July 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI’s District Team Leader (Lasbela) – Mr. Rashid Butt attended the meeting organized under the chairmanship of Honorable Deputy Commissioner (Lasbela) – Mr. Shabir Ahmed Mengal. This District Education Group’s meeting was held as a regular exercise to have an update on the ongoing activities by various ngo’s towards the promotion of education. Senior representatives of European Commission were also present during the meeting to witness the positive initiatives taken by the present government of Baluchistan to uplift the education standards of district Lasbela.

One of the key challenges is the enrollment of all out-of-children (OOSC) in educational facilities so they may acquire at least primary education. In lieu of this regular meetings are being held by the government’s concerned departments to apply effective social mobilization strategies so the parents and community elders may whole-heartedly participate to have their children enrolled in schools specially the girls. Aggressive follow-ups are being made on the performances of ngo’s to be updated about the upcoming and ongoing projects that can contribute towards the eradication of illiteracy from the district.

Representatives of NCHD, WANG, NRSP and ESP along with senior government officials were present during this meeting.

 

Distribution of Flavored Tea in The Rabia Azim Trust Schools:


During the month of June, OSDI received a surplus quantity of biscuits and flavored tea from a donor. It was requested to have the donation distributed amongst all the vulnerable communities and schools. As it was a surplus quantity the management at OSDI decided to have a few boxes of flavored tea distributed amongst the schools supported by The Rabia Azim Trust.

It is a sister concern non-governmental organization (NGO) of Marine Group of Companies (MRGC) which was formed in 2009 with a vision to help improve the educational system in Karachi slums. Education Policy Advisor at The Rabia Azim Trust – Ms. Wasima Sharf was facilitated with a hearty donation of flavored tea on 10th July 2019 (Wednesday). Between 10th – 15th July 2019, the tea boxes were distributed across 9 adopted and supported schools of the trust; in which 107 teachers, headmasters and non-teaching staff was given a tea box. Each box consisted of 20 sachets of flavored tea.

Altogether, 128 boxes were distributed amongst these schools which are located in Kemari, Clifton and Bhit Island areas of Karachi.

 

Meeting with NCHD official in District Thatta:


On 25th July 2019 (Thursday), OSDI’s district Thatta Team Leader – Mr. Muhammad Usman met the District Head of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) – Mr. Daim Janwari in his office. The meeting was held to mutually work towards promotion and creating awareness for education in district Thatta (Sindh).

During the meeting, Mr. Usman shared the copy of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between OSDI and NCHD in Islamabad to mutually collaborate for betterment of vulnerable communities in various sectors of Education, Health-care and Livelihood. Mr. Daim ensured his complete support to help OSDI in initiation of Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) and provision of syllabus for Adult Literacy Centers (ALCs). Furthermore, he also emphasized on the importance of capacity building of teachers to help improve the quality of education that would be delivered at OSDI schools.

Interventions in Education field are soon expected to commence in district Thatta by OSDI.

 

Hingol National Park Donates Plants again:


OSDI has once again received a generous donation of 100 plants from Hingol National Park (HNP) during this month. Team Leader of district Lasbela – Mr. Rashid Butt has collected 65 plants on 17th July 2019 (Wednesday) from Mr. Raja Asif – Deputy Conservation Officer (DCO).

Plants donated include 25 Paras-Pipal plants also known as Thespasia Populnea Linn, Madras Thorn (5), China Rose (10), Sheesham (5) also known as Indian Rosewood, Apple Tree (5) and Conocarpus plant (15) variety. The plants received are being used for the decoration and beautification of OSDI built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Sayarani Goth. This educational facility has been set-up as a model school.

Soon the remaining plants shall also be collected and distributed amongst the susceptible focused communities.

 

Temporary Learning Center of Sayarani Goth – A Model School:


During the month of April 2019, OSDI constructed a two classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the community of Sayarani Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). This community is located in the revenue village of Retalara. Due to OSDI’s active social mobilization campaigns currently there are 58 students enrolled in this school. The number of students is expected to grow further after the summer break.

The raise in enrollment has led to an appointment of one more teacher. Since, OSDI plans to make this educational facility a model school a variety of initiatives have been taken to add value to this facility. On 16th July 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI has completed the fencing work outside the school, ground filling and levelling has also been done in the playground and a road has been constructed connecting the school to the link road.

Soon, OSDI shall plant a variety of trees for beautification and a pipeline shall be connected from the main water source.

 

Construction of TLC in Chamasara:


The revenue village of Chamasara is located in Union Council of Kehnwari in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). The community comprises of 28 households, having a population of around 280 people. Due to unavailability of any educational facility within 3-4 kms radius of this village the children didn’t acquire education.

Upon OSDI’s intervention, the community showed interest in having their children educated. Based on this, OSDI has constructed a one classroom based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in this community on 14th July 2019 (Sunday). 30 out-of-school children (OOSC) have been enrolled as of now. These students include 14 male and 16 females. To avoid any further delay, classes have been initiated from 23rd April 2019 (Tuesday) after an active social mobilization campaign. The community hall was provided by the village elders; until the TLC was formally constructed.

Teaching material and stationary items shall be donated to the school soon after beginning of the classes from summer break. Moreover, the government of Baluchistan shall facilitate the students with course books.

 

Enrollment Drive in Yaqoob Jokhio Goth:


OSDI’s district Thatta team, conducted an initial enrollment drive in the newly selected susceptible community of Yaqoob Jokhio in Union Council of Chaubandi on 10th July 2019 (Wednesday). The enrollment campaign was done to highlight the importance of education amongst children and motivate the parents/guardians to educate their children.

The community of Yaqoob Jokhio comprises of 167 households. The community has a ghost school which has been non-functional for over a decade and the infrastructure of this school is on the verge of collapsing. To facilitate the 442 out-of-school children (OOSC) in this community; OSDI has initiated to construct a 2 classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) with one separate washroom.

The construction work shall begin soon in the upcoming days after which formal classes shall begin.

 

Senior Management visits Vulnerable Communities in Thatta:


On 11th July 2019 (Thursday), Manager Programs of OSDI – Mr. Sheheryar N. Khan and Chief Accountant /Admin Manager – Mr. Ather J. Siddiqui visited the newly selected focused communities of Yaqoob Jokhio and Wali Muhammad Pitafi Goth in Union Council Chaubandi in district Thatta (Sindh). Senior Management visited the non-functional ghost schools in both the villages.

Community elders were asked to have their all out-of-school children (OOSC) enrolled in schools when OSDI will construct Temporary Learning Centers (TLC’s) in their communities. Mr. Sheheryar also motivated the young adults to join the Basic Literacy Classes that would be conducted in OSDI constructed TLCs to overcome illiteracy.

Furthermore, the community members were also asked about the livelihood resources and their income generation methods. OSDI intends to initiate its intervention in both these communities by constructing TLC’s, soon.

 

OSDI’s Team Thatta visits NRSP for KG:


On 9th July 2019 (Tuesday), OSDI’s district Thatta Team Leader – Mr. Muhammad Usman and Mr. Abdul Rehman – Social Mobilizer visited the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) office to meet Mr. Ghulam Muhammad Lashari – Manager in Tahluka Mirpur Sakro. The meeting was held to see and learn about the unique Kitchen Gardening (K.G.) cultivation model implemented in the hall of this office.

Representatives of NRSP team had prepared an artificial K.G. bed to grow vegetables in a local sack. This has been done to protect the seed from being destroyed. As it is a pilot project growth of the plants is being observed. Seeds of Ladyfinger, Apple Gourd and Ridge Gourd have been sown in the initial phase.

Mr. Usman plans to show the members of the newly selected focused communities to see how healthy vegetables can be grown so they may try to implement the same method.

 

Solar Water Project (SWP) installed in Baizad Banda:


The community of Lower Baizad Banda comprises of 30 under-privileged households. Since long, these people have been dependent on a nearby natural spring water facility to fulfill their daily water requirements. However, with the passage of time the water levels had decreased. Upon OSDI’s intervention in this community, the villagers requested to have a water facility installed.

Mr. Sajjad Said – Head of District Mardan (KPK) formed a Water Management Committee (WMC) in March 2019 after which the construction work began. Each member of WMC was nominated by the community adults. Bore was done by OSDI to extract water and on 5th July 2019 (Friday), the installation of Solar Water Project (SWP) was completed. Nearly, 60 liters of water per minute is being extracted as of now from this facility.

In near future, OSDI shall install a water storage tank in this community.

 

Beneficiaries Facilitated under SREP in district Mardan:


During this year, 2 young men have been supported to initiate their sugarcane juice shop from district Mardan (KPK). Jehan Zada and Hussan Zeb are both residents of Prrang Dara, a small village set in the mountainous region of U.C. Palo Dheri in district Mardan (KPK). Hussan was a labor by profession prior to becoming an SREP member. It was really hard for him to make both the ends meet being a daily wage worker. Jehan Zada on the other hand was partially engaged in livestock rearing. Family size of each of these beneficiaries is 5.

Shah Faisal, is a young man from the community of Biroch in U.C. Bazaar in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). OSDI has supported him to initiate an electric spare parts store within his village. There are 10 members in Faisal’s family.

The average monthly income in each of the beneficiary households was PKR 6,000 prior to OSDI’s intervention. In near future, more vulnerable youth shall be supported under this project in district Mardan.

 

SREP initiated in district Lasbela:


As per plan OSDI is focusing more on increasing the Livelihood opportunities for the susceptible beneficiaries residing in various targeted communities of district Lasbela (Baluchistan), during this year. These beneficiaries have been selected based on their high vulnerability levels and dependency ratio according to the Small Rural Enterprise Project (SREP) model which says that a beneficiary should be educated and unemployed. OSDI has selected 6 beneficiaries from its rural communities; maintaining gender equality with 3 males and 3 females.

Prior to initiation of the project, OSDI formally organized a financial literacy training session within its district Lasbela office. During this session, beneficiaries were educated about various methods to maintain their accounts and goods. On 1st July 2019 (Monday), distribution of goods was made amongst the beneficiaries. All 3 females were provided with stitching and tailoring items so, they may conveniently work within their homes. As for the 3 males they were supported to initiate their grocery & general items store.

Beneficiaries have been selected from Azam Goth & Sajjan Goth from revenue village of Chamasara and Mangyani Goth, Sayarani Goth, Bakhrani Goth and Kareer Goth of U.C. Wayaro. The estimated family size per beneficiary is 7 members. Amongst the female beneficiaries, one is a widow and one is divorced. Both these ladies were dependent on their brothers for survival, by participating in this project they have become empowered to earn a respectable living. On an average the monthly income per beneficiary was PKR 6,000 and we hope that under this project they shall be able to generate more income.

 

Urea Bags Distributed to ADP Beneficiaries:


As it’s the first phase of Agriculture Development Project (ADP) in district Lasbela (Baluchistan); training and capacity building of the farmers is closely observed. During this phase cotton crop is being grown. So far, 2 training sessions have been organized by OSDI’s district Lasbela team in which senior agro experts were invited to deliver the awareness sessions on crop maintenance and yielding procedures.

After the successful disbursement of DAP fertilizer bags, cotton seeds and tillage amount on 3rd June 2019 (Monday), OSDI facilitated the 20 ADP farmers with 3 bags per beneficiary of Urea. It is a most important nitrogenous fertilizer that is a white crystalline organic chemical compound. It facilitates the plants with suitable amount of nitrogen so the plant looks more green and healthy.

Each farmer has grown the crop on 3 acres of land. One bag per acre shall be utilized to benefit the crop. The second round of urea bags shall be distributed after 15-20days time period after which the third round of urea bags shall be given.

 

Distribution of Hygiene Kits in village Tangoo:


The vulnerable people of village Tangoo in district Mardan (KPK), had become victims of an outbreak of diarrhea infection in the community. 100 people had gotten severely ill. Due to the timely assistance provided by OSDI’s Mr. Sajjad Said – Head of District Mardan; the District Health Officer (DHO) – Dr. Abdul Basit was informed after which a free medical camp was set-up in the community.

The courageous doctors, paramedical staff and concerned government authorities extended their full support in facilitating the ailing people. Mr. Atif Khan a resident of U.C. Bazar had customized hygiene kits prepared for each of the 24 households in village Tangoo and handed them to Mr. Said for distribution purpose. Each hygiene kit contained a towel, dish wash bar and sponge, a water bottle and 6 glasses, 2 tissue paper rolls, a nail cutter, an anti-bacterial soap, Dettol liquid and Dentonic powder for oral hygiene.

Mr. Said also conducted a detailed orientation on the use of all the hygiene products. The villagers were educated on the necessity of personal hygiene to live a healthy life.

 

Diarrhea outbreak in Tangoo community:


Nearly 100 people fell ill due to a severe outbreak of diarrhea in the small mountainous community of village Tangoo, U.C. Bazar, Tehsil Rustam, district Mardan (KPK). There are approximately 24 households within this community comprising of 189 individuals. Upon knowing OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said played a proactive role in informing the concerned authorities on the severity of the issue as a 6 year old girl had lost her life. The index case out-broke on 4th June 2019 (Tuesday) whereby, more number of people started complaining of the issue.

Since, the village is high up on the mountain there isn’t any health-care facility available and to bring so many patients down was a matter of grave concern. Understanding the urgency an immediate action was taken by the District Health Officer (Mardan) to set-up a free medical camp in Tangoo community on 15th June 2019 (Saturday). Medicines were carried up the mountain on camel back.

The selfless efforts of Dr. Waseem Mughal – Medical Officer at Al Khidmat Mashal Medical Complex Mardan and Dr. Saad – Medical Officer at Category D Hospital Rustam are worthy of appreciation for treating the patients. Altogether, 52 males and 49 females including children were diagnosed. On the other hand, Mr. Asghar – District Food Inspector along with his team collected water samples from 6 different locations for microbiological tests. Upon the advocacy of Mr. Said, aqua-tabs (chlorine) were distributed amongst all the families by the provincial directorate as a precautionary measure until the water test results are received. Health & hygiene session was conducted by Mr. Said in which 40 community members were educated on importance of hygiene.

Moreover, the community has also been facilitated with hygiene kits per household which includes soap, nail cutter, towel, shampoo, tooth brush and tooth paste, etc.

 

Enrollment Campaign in TLC Arab Seray:


On 27th May 2019 (Monday), the teachers of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Arab Seray community along with the support of field staff of district Mardan (KPK), organized a one day enrollment campaign. The purpose of this campaign was to motivate the parents and community elders to have the out-of-school children enrolled in the TLC.

As a result of OSDI’s counselling 6 out-of-school children were enrolled in school in primary classes. Each child was interviewed and had to pass through an elementary level test prior to admission.

Due to OSDI’s efforts more and more parents are being eager to educate their children for a better tomorrow!

 

First Financial Literacy Training held in Lasbela:


To facilitate the educated and unemployed youth of district Lasbela (Baluchistan); OSDI has initiated its Small Rural Enterprise Project (SREP) during the month of May. As of now, 6 beneficiaries have been selected to initiate their small businesses.

To train and educate these beneficiaries on the basic principles of accounting, a one day training session was held at OSDI’s field office in district Lasbela on 30th May 2019 (Thursday). Mr. Rashid Butt (Team Leader – Lasbela) and Mr. Sheeraz Ahmed (Social Mobilizer – Lasbela) taught the beneficiaries about basic details on financial management and handling, recording of day-to-day finances and keeping a check on profit and loss.

All 3 male beneficiaries have chosen to open grocery shops in their respective vicinity, whereas; the 3 females have shown an interest to open embroidery and tailoring shops in their homes.

 

Second Farmers Training held for ADP beneficiaries:


Moving a step forward from the initial training delivered to the Agriculture Development Project (ADP) beneficiaries in the previous month; OSDI organized an advance level training on 15th May 2019 (Wednesday) in Sayarani Goth, district Lasbela (Baluchistan).

Mr. Abdul Samad – Lecturer in Entomology Dept. at University of Lasbela delivered the training session. He carries a hands on experience in organic cotton.

Altogether, 16 participants attended the learning session. Farmers were briefed about the advance farming methods involved in yielding of cotton crop. After the session, queries pertaining to the technicalities involved in increasing crop production and safety procedures were also answered. Mr. Samad also visited the fields to check upon the crop health and guide the farmers in case of need.

 

Youth supported in Sudham Cricket Tournament:


Cricket is a game which captures the heart of not only youth but people from all walks and ages of life. Engaging the youth through this sport to realize the importance of a healthy life, this year OSDI supported the cricket match held on Friday, 31st May 2019. Since, this day is regarded as World No Tobacco Day, OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said briefed the audience on the side effects of Naswar (Tobacco) and Cigarette smoking on health. He also shared introductory details about OSDI and benefits of technical and vocational training.

Every year, 70 teams from Tehsil Rustam participate in this annual tournament; in which more than 2500 people are spectators per match. The series of matches continues till eid until the final winning team has been announced.

On behalf of OSDI, Mr. Said distributed trophies and cash prices amongst the winning teams along with promotional caps and certificates as a token of appreciation.

 

OSDI and NCHD Join Hands for Poverty Alleviation:


On 28th May 2019 (Tuesday), Mr. Aasim A. Siddiqui – Founder Trustee of Organization for Social Development Initiatives (OSDI) signed an agreement with Col. (Rtd.) Dr. Amirullah Khan Marwat – Chairman, National Commission for Human Development (NCHD); becoming their first local partner to work towards poverty alleviation in the country. The event was witnessed by Mr. Sheheryar N. Khan – Manager Programs and Mr. Babar Junaid – Senior Associate Manager (LAP) from OSDI and Mr. Shafqat Ali Janjua – Director Education, Mr. Habibullah Khan – Deputy Director, Syed Rizwan Ali Shah – Assistant Director (Education) and Khawaja Ahmed Hussain - Assistant Director (Education) from NCHD.

Both the organizations have mutually agreed to collaborate on improving the lives of the vulnerable people through engaging in education, health-care and livelihood programs in the focused communities of district Mardan (KPK), Thatta (Sindh) and Lasbela (Baluchistan).

OSDI shall construct and renovate Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) and Feeder Schools; along with donation of necessary school equipment to facilitate the students. NCHD on the other hand shall, appoint and train teachers in all the educational facilities intervened by OSDI. Moreover, both the organizations shall support each other in School Based De-Worming program (SBDW), Ear, Nose and Throat (E.N.T.) tests, setting up Free General Medical Camps (GMCs) in the focused communities and provide vocational trainings to empower the youth. Besides this, NCHD shall also facilitate in training of farmers in Livelihood Assistance Program (LAP) of OSDI.

 

Free GMC held in Village Council Biroch:


In district Mardan (KPK), lies village council of Biroch within the union council of Bazaar. This village is deprived of any basic health-care facility. On 11th May 2019 (Saturday), OSDI organized a one day free General Medical Camp (GMC) in this area along with the support of the local community members and district health department in the Community Hujra. A total number of 216 patients were facilitated with free consultation and treatment during this GMC by OSDI’s appointed doctors and paramedical staff. Free medicines were also provided to the ailing people upon primary diagnoses. One severely ill patient was referred to Mardan Medical Complex for further treatment. OSDI’s district team informed the local communities of Lower Baizad Banda, Upper Baizad Banda, Boday Qabar, Parrang Dara, Sher Abad, Shany Zangal and Biroch through loud speakers of mosque regarding the one day free GMC, a day prior to the activity.

 

DHO Lasbela visits OSDI’s supported schools:


On 11th May 2019 (Saturday), the Honorable District Health Officer (DHO) of Lasbela (Baluchistan) – Dr. Ahmed Baloch along with a representative from People’s Primary Health-care Initiatives (PPHI) visited OSDI supported schools to conduct a health & hygiene awareness and eye care session. The activity was carried out in Government Boys High School in Wayaro and OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Chib Sheikh.

Being a qualified eye specialist Dr. Ahmed, closely checked the eyes of students and briefed the students about the importance of health & hygiene. Moreover, the students were also informed about necessary steps to safeguard their health & vision.

Iron supplement syrups were also distributed amongst the students by the district health department; as a remedy to treat the low blood levels of iron in the body. Iron is a necessary mineral which the body needs to produce more red blood cells in order to stay healthy. OSDI also donated 2 jerry cans in the TLC of Chib Sheikh to facilitate the students with safe drinking water.

 

DAP fertilizer given to ADP beneficiaries:


First phase of Agriculture Development Project (ADP) has begun in the focused communities of Siyarani Goth and Miru Suleiman Goth, district Lasbela (Baluchistan). Altogether the 20 selected beneficiaries have been nominated to grow cotton crop during this phase. Almost all the beneficiaries shall cultivate 3acres of farmland on an average.

In the previous month, OSDI distributed tillage amount in cash along with seeds to all the farmers. From 29th April – 3rd May 2019, OSDI facilitated the farmers with DAP bags. 3 bags per beneficiary were given. Diammonium phosphate (DAP) is the world's most widely used phosphorus fertilizer. It's made from two common constituents in the fertilizer industry, and its relatively high nutrient content and excellent physical properties make it a popular choice in farming and other industries. It is an excellent source of phosphorus and nitrogen for plant nutrition; as it helps plants grow quickly and improves the leaf quality along with increasing the production of seed and fruit size.

The farmers were grateful to OSDI for its support and assured they would work hard on their farmlands to avail positive results.

 

Jerry Cans Distributed in Feeder Schools:


OSDI constructed 2 Temporary Learning Centers in the vulnerable communities of Faqeera Goth and Hashim Goth as per the agreement with NCHD. Both the TLCs had been built and handed over in the month of April 2019. Later on, necessary school equipment was also given to both these schools by OSDI. Equipment donated included teacher’s table, chair, floor mats, white boards and water coolers.

On 9th May 2019 (Thursday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt along with our partner Mr. Zahid Baloch – Deputy Director from NCHD visited the 2 classrooms based Girls Feeder School in Faqeera Goth and 1 classroom based Boys Feeder School on Hashim Goth. There are more than 60 students currently enrolled in the girl’s school and 35 students acquiring education in the boy’s school.

OSDI donated 2 jerry cans in the girl’s school and delivered 2 sessions on health & hygiene in this school training almost 50 students present on that day. Since most of the students had left for home due to late arrival of our team in the boy’s school so only 12 students were present in the health & hygiene session awareness class. 1 jerry can was donated in this school.

NCHD has appointed 2 full-time teachers in the girl’s school and 1 male teacher in the boy’s school; besides managing the administrative and academic operations of both these schools.

 

OSDI Participates in DEG meeting:


On 8th May 2019 (Wednesday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt attended the follow-up meeting organized by the District Education Department, Government of Baluchistan. The meeting was chaired by the Honorable Deputy Commissioner (Lasbela) - Mr. Shabir Ahmed Mengal.

This purpose of this meeting was to be aware about the ongoing developments in the education field. District Lasbela has been under the limelight by the Government of Baluchistan to improve its educational standards and focus on 100% enrollment of all out-of-school children to increase the literacy ratio. Moreover, aggressive efforts are being made at both the district and private level to increase the female literacy in the region. During the meeting issues pertaining to government schools, teachers and students absenteeism were also discussed.

Representatives from WANG, NCHD, NRSP and OSDI along with Education Support Programme officials attended this meeting.

 

Second Free GMC organized in Sayarani Goth:


In the Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Sayarani Goth, district Lasbela (Baluchistan) OSDI organized a one day free General Medical Camp on 4th May 2019 (Saturday). It was the second free GMC in this community. Representatives from NRSP were also present during this medical camp to facilitate the patients against Malaria disease.

Altogether, 381 ailing people were facilitated with free medical check-up and consultation by OSDI’s appointed doctors and trained paramedical staff. Patients diagnosed with health issues were provided with free medicines by OSDI. One severely ill patient was referred to the DHQ in Utthal for further treatment.

NRSP’s representative conducted Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) on 25 people amongst which 2 people were identified as Malaria positive. Appropriate medication was given to the patients as per requirement.

 

OSDI participates in Malaria Awareness Workshop:


In district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI has collaborated with National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) to mutually work towards eradication and controlling of Malaria disease. To serve the purpose both the organizations have joined hands to conduct extensive awareness raising workshops and trainings within the district. The primary target for awareness being the students and community females.

On 3rd May 2019 (Friday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt attended the Malaria Awareness workshop organized by Malaria/Vector Borne Diseases Control Program, Health Department - Lasbela and supported by NRSP in Lasbela. Doctors, Lady Health Workers (LHWs), Health care providers and representatives of NGO were also invited to attend this workshop.

Mr. Ijaz Paracha – Director Malaria Unit (Baluchistan) for Malaria/Vector Borne Diseases Control Program and Mr. Ali Ahmad - District Health Officer (Lasbela) delivered awareness sessions on Malaria, Dengue and other vector borne diseases.

 

BBCM conducted in Pini Ladhoo:


On 29th April 2019 (Monday), OSDI conducted a Broad Based Community Meeting (BBCM) in the focused community of Pini Ladhoo in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). The purpose of this meeting was to create a School Management Committee (SMC) and identify land for the construction of a Temporary Learning Center (TLC).

The community elders nominated SMC members based on their repute and credibility within the village. Land identification for the construction of a TLC was also done during this meeting.

More than 25 students have been enrolled in the temporary school area that has been provided by the community members to begin classes as of now. NCHD has also appointed a male teacher here. OSDI has facilitated the students with course books to avoid any further delay in the learning process.

 

H&H session conducted in Chamasara:


In the revenue village of Chamasara, U.C. Kehnwari, district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI conducted a health & hygiene awareness session on 26th April 2019 (Friday). The session was held at the community hall which has been provided to OSDI on temporary basis by the villagers to be used as a school facility until the construction of formal Temporary Learning Center (TLC) takes place.

More than 35 students have been enrolled in this school by OSDI so far. 6 elderly members of the community along with the students enrolled attended this awareness raising session on H&H.

OSDI distributed life saver jerry cans to the community members after completion of the activity.

 

World Malaria Day celebrated in GGMS Khaskeli:


OSDI has collaborated with National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) to create awareness against “Malaria”. It is a life-threatening mosquito borne blood disease which is mainly caused due to filthy or contaminated water. Its symptoms include shivering, body pain, high fever, vomiting and severe headache.

On 25th April 2019 (Saturday), OSDI and NRSP organized a joint awareness session against Malaria disease in Government Girls Middle School located in Khaskeli Jamat Khana. The school lies at a distance of 1km, almost 10 mins drive from OSDI’s district Lasbela office.

Nearly, 250 female students attended this training session. Ms. Nasreen – Social Mobilizer at NRSP delivered the session on Malaria Prevention and Awareness.

 

Second Phase of SBDW activity in GBHS Wayaro:


Government Boys High School in Union Council Wayaro, district Lasbela (Baluchistan) was in a devastated situation upon OSDI’s initial intervention in this region. The school was reconstructed and refurbished by OSDI in 2017 on the request of the district government.

GBHS Wayaro has been termed as the best school in the entire district by senior government officials on multiple occassions. The enrollment ratio has increased from 376 to 446 students. Since inception, OSDI has held several awareness raising activities in this school to not only boost the morale of the students but also to educate them about the importance of health & hygiene.

On 27th April 2019 (Saturday), the second phase of School Based De-Worming activity was conducted in this school in which 396 students were present out of 446 students. The activity was carried out under the supervision of Mr. Hassam – OSDI’s Health Assistant and a female Social Mobilizer. Each student was facilitated with a dose of de-worming medicine and a 250ml milk pack. OSDI’s appointed Social Mobilizer educated the students about safe health & hygiene practices.

De-Worming medicine for the absent students had been handed over to the school headmaster. DEO (Lasbela) – Mr. Hashmi graced the occasion with his valuable presence on this day.

 

Senior Management of OSDI meets NCHD team:


On 15th April 2019 (Monday), senior management of OSDI – Mr. Sheheryar N. Khan (Manager Programs) and Mr. Babar Junaid (Senior Associate Manager – LAP) met the senior management of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) in Islamabad. Chairman NCHD - Col. (R). Dr. Amirullah Marwat accompanied by Director of Education - Dr. Shafqat Ali Janjua, Deputy Director - Mr. Habibullah Khan and Personal Secretary to Chairman – Mr. Naveed Iqbal attended the meeting.

During the meeting, matters pertaining to mutual interest between both the organizations were discussed. The gathering explored opportunities for further expansion of projects in focused communities.

The key objective of both the organizations remains the same; as to uplift the rural communities; through provision of improved health-care and education along with creating opportunities for capacity building for human development. Partnership details shall soon be shared upon finalization by both the parties.

 

Earth Day celebrated in TLC Chib Sheikh:


Students of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Chib Sheikh community, district Lasbela (Baluchistan) celebrated the International Earth Day in their school. The activity took place on 22nd April 2019 (Monday). It was for the first time such an interactive activity had been held in this school.

Mr. Rashid Butt (Team Leader – Lasbela) and a female representative of NCHD discussed about the importance of mother earth with the students. As it was hot outside, so an indoor activity was planned for the students; in which, the children drew images of mother earth and nature’s blessings in their rough notebooks and colored it.

Representatives of the OSDI’s School Management Committee (SMC) were also present during the occasion.

 

Government provides Course Books for TLC Arab Seray:


On 19th April 2019 (Friday), OSDI’s Field Assistant – Mr. Ibrar Ali received course books from the Head Teacher of Government Primary School in Sajawal Banda Goth. This small village is located at a distance of 4kms from Arab Seray community in the mountainous region of district Mardan (KPK) in Union Council of Bazaar.

Mr. Mehboob Ali – Head Teacher of GPS in Sajawal Banda Goth acknowledged the continuous efforts of OSDI in playing a positive role in highlighting the cause of education in the poverty struck community of Arab Seray. The course books consist of English, Urdu, Pashto, Maths, Islamic Studies and General Science subjects.

All 70 students of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in Arab Seray community shall be facilitated with these course books.

 

OSDI and NRSP join hands for Anti-Malaria Program in Lasbela:


OSDI organized a one day Free General Medical Camp (GMC) at Chamasara Behri stop, U.C. Kahenwari, Tehsil Utthal, Lasbela district (Baluchistan) on Wednesday, 17th April 2019. The GMC was held in collaboration with the District Health Department.

Nearly, 387 patients were treated and consulted for free during the medical camp. OSDI appointed 2 male and 1 female doctor to facilitate the ailing people.

NRSP joint hands with OSDI in the month of February 2019, to mutually make efforts towards eradication of Malaria in district Lasbela. Under Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria project (GFATM), NRSP set-up an anti-malaria drive by conducting Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) during the GMC. Patients traveled from upto 10 kms on average to visit the GMC on foot and motorbikes.

100 females and 60 males were educated on the importance of health & hygiene on this day.

 

First Phase of ADP in district Lasbela:


In district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI has initiated the first phase of Agriculture Development Project (ADP) in Sayarani and Miru Suleiman Goth. During this phase, 20 beneficiary households have been selected to grow cotton seeds.

In the previous month, an agro training had been conducted by OSDI to educate these beneficiaries about the technicalities involved in crop production. Between, 10th – 14th April 2019 (Wednesday – Sunday) the farmers were facilitated with cotton seeds and tillage amount PKR 5,400 in cash for land preparation.

Each beneficiary has been assisted to harvest 3 acres of land. Urea and DAP shall be distributed in near future.

 

Health check of LDP animals:


On 13th April 2019 (Saturday), OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt accompanied by Dr. Kareem, a senior veterinary expert visited the focused communities of Mangyani and Sayarani Goth to check upon the health of animals distributed under Livestock Development Project – Phase 2 in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). During this phase, 20 beneficiary households have been facilitated with 40 pregnant does and 8 bucks.

OSDI’s appointed vet not only checked the health of animals distributed by OSDI; but, also examined the health of other animals owned by the community members. Details related to animal weight and size were also recorded.

It was reported that due to the change in weather, 5 animals were currently suffering from cough and 2 animals had suffered from diarrhea few days back. In order to protect the health of all the animals’ vaccination was provided.

 

Construction of TLC’s in Faqeera and Hashim Goth:


OSDI has constructed one classroom based Temporary Learning Centers in the rural communities of Faqeera Goth and Hashim Goth in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). Both the TLCs have been built as a part of mutual collaboration between OSDI and NCHD to promote the cause of education in this region.

Construction of both these TLCs was completed on 7th April 2019 (Sunday). Currently, the strength of students in Girls Feeder School of Faqeera Goth in revenue village of Retalara is 60. Students in Boys Feeder School of Hashim Goth in revenue village of Watori is 30.

NCHD has facilitated both these schools with male teachers. It is expected that the number of enrollments in both these schools shall rise in the upcoming days.

 

OSDI’s Teachers Attend an Elementary Level Training:


From 1st – 13th April 2019, 3 male teachers of OSDI’s built Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) in Chib Sheikh and Sayarani Goth attended the training session organized by Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in collaboration with Provincial Institute for Teacher Education (PITE), UNICEF and European Union. It was an elementary level training in which teachers were taught about various pedagogy tools to enhance learning; and making it a two way knowledge-sharing process.

AC class concept, Disaster Risk Management and Multi-grade teaching were the main course of this training. The teachers were also taught on assessment types, methods of interactive learning, school safety plan, school development plan and ensuring physical and mental health of the student.

Master trainers Mr. Sheraz Khan and Mr. Muhammad Asif conducted this 12 day course in Government College of Elementary Education in Utthal. Certificates were distributed amongst all the participants after completion of this course.

 

Bore Drilling in Chamasara Goth:


For the provision of safe drinking water in the revenue village of Chamasara in U.C. Kehnwari in district Lasbela (Baluchistan), OSDI has initiated to do bore. The drilling work began on 6th April 2019 (Saturday) and is still under process.

30 vulnerable households located in 3-4 scattered settlements of this community; shall now be able to avail fresh and clean water after completion of this project. Previously, the villager’s availed water from a natural spring located at an average distance of 5 kms. The water was fetched on donkeys by female members of the family. Due to the long travelling distance; fetching water was a tough job. Females had to make atleast 2-3 rounds per day to fetch water in order to meet the daily water requirements of their families.

After completion of the drilling work, installation of Solar Water Panels and a water storage tank shall be placed by OSDI.

 

OSDI Donates Equipment to NCHD schools:


As per the MoU signed between the senior management of OSDI and NCHD, last year to support each other for the cause of education in district Lasbela (Baluchistan); on 8th April 2019 (Monday) OSDI donated school equipment to 4 schools of NCHD. These equipment’s were handed over to NCHD’s representative Mr. Mehboob Shah Rashidi by Mr. Sheeraz - Social Mobilizer at OSDI’s Lasbela office.

5 Teacher tables, 5 Teacher chairs, 20 Floor Mats, 4 White boards with stand and 4 Water coolers were donated for NCHD’s built Girls Feeder School at Faqeera Goth in U.C. Wayaro, Girls Feeder School in Sain Goth at Gaddani, Girls Feeder School in Muhammad Channa at U.C. Kehnwari and Boys Feeder School in Watori at U.C. Wayaro.

Together, NCHD and OSDI shall support more schools in the upcoming days for the promotion of education in district Lasbela (Baluchistan).

 

Construction of TLC in Sayarani Goth:


In the distant village of Sayarani Goth, OSDI has recently constructed a two classrooms based Temporary Learning Center (TLC) along with a washroom facility. There are 6 small settlements within this vicinity with nearly, 150 out-of-school children. The construction work has completed on 3rd April 2019 (Wednesday).

As there is no school available within the radius of 4 kilometers; OSDI selected this area to construct an educational facility. The enrollment ratio is expected to be more than 70-80 students in the initial phase; of this TLC’s functioning.

Currently, NCHD has appointed a full-time male teacher for this school. An active social mobilization activity shall soon be initiated in this revenue village for the enrollment of all the out-of-school children after which a formal inauguration ceremony shall also be conducted. In the near future, OSDI shall facilitate the students with course books, stationary items and sports accessories.

 

International Sports Day Celebrated in District Lasbela:


On 6th April 2019 (Saturday), OSDI in collaboration with NCHD organized the International Sports & Peace Day in Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Chib Sheikh. It’s for the first time such a fun-filled and thrilling day was celebrated in this vicinity.

Students of TLC in Chib Sheikh enjoyed every moment of the event with cheerful faces. OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt arranged for various outdoor games such as Lemon on Spoon, Sack Race, Skipping Rope Race, Three Leg Race and Relay Race. A skit was also played highlighting the importance of Hand-Wash by the school children.

OSDI distributed goody bags amongst all the students present on this activity day. Mr. Butt gave promotional caps with OSDI’s logo to all the participants and team players. Exclusive gift items were also given to the winners. .

 

OSDI Supports All Pakistan Volleyball Tournament:


Celebrating the International Sports & World Peace Day on 6th April 2019 (Saturday), OSDI supported a volleyball match in district Mardan (KPK). This match was held in continuation with All Pakistan Volleyball Tournament series that is currently being held amongst 23 teams. This tournament is held every year to engage the youth in sports.

2 teams consisting of 6 players (each) participated in the one day series that was supported by OSDI. The event was organized by Selaab Volleyball Club in Volleyball Ground of Rustam. OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said distributed trophies amongst the winning and runner-up team. All the players were given special gift hampers consisting of T-shirts, caps, OSDI’s annual report and yearly wall calendar. The winning team members were awarded with medals and certificates.

Acknowledging the hard work of the management in training and engaging the players in physical sports, Mr. Said gave a cash prize of PKR 5,000 to the officials.

 

First Agro Training Takes Place in District Lasbela:


Prior to initiating the Agro project of OSDI, an Agriculture Management Committee (AMC) was formed last week in Sayarani Goth. Representatives of this AMC were democratically nominated by the community members themselves.

On 30th March 2019 (Saturday), OSDI organized a formal training of all the selected Agriculture Development Project (ADP) beneficiaries, to become familiar with the technicalities involved in land preparation and crop sowing. Having 2 years of experience in Organic cotton Mr. Adeel Samad – Lecturer (Entomology Dept.) and Mr. Qaiser Habib – Lecturer (Horticulture Dept.) at University of Lasbela were invited as trainers by OSDI. Since it’s the first phase of this project in Lasbela district, OSDI has selected 20 beneficiaries to participate.

Cotton would be the grown in this phase.

 

BBCM held in District Mardan:


Under the supervision of Mr. Sajjad Said, OSDI’s district Mardan (KPK) team held Broad Based Community Meetings (BBCMs) with the villagers of Boday Qabar, Prang Dara and Baizad Banda. These meetings were held for three consecutive days from 27th – 29th March 2019.

It was ensured that atleast one representative from every household of these selected communities was present during the BBCM. Matters pertaining to enrollment of all out-of-school children, construction of Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs), eradication of water poverty issues, initiation of Small Rural Enterprise Project (SREP) and Livestock distribution were discussed in these sessions.

OSDI has guided the community members to form various project management committees which shall ensure smooth functioning of their respective projects. The management committees were also asked to collect Community Development Funds (CDF) from the villagers to increase and promote the sense of responsibility and ownership amongst the community members.

The villagers appreciated the efforts of OSDI in helping them improve their lives.

 

Enrollment Awareness Walk in GBHS Wayaro:


The government officials in district Lasbela (Baluchistan) are very keen to improve the literacy rate of the district; by having all the out-of-school children enrolled in schools. An education emergency has been declared in this locality. District education department has aggressively engaged all concerned authorities to play their role significantly in ensuring 100% enrollments for primary classes.

In lieu of this an enrollment awareness walk was held on 29th March 2019 (Friday) at Government Boys High School in Wayaro. The event was graced by the newly appointed District Education Officer (DEO) Lasbela – Mr. Ameer Bux.

Other dignitaries including DO – Mr. Haji Naveed, DDO (Uthhal) - Mr. Ghulam Rasool, Chairman Parents Teachers School Management Committee (PTSMC) - Mr. Wadeera Kareem and representatives of NCHD, WANG and UNICEF-ESP were also present during the enrollment awareness campaign.

On behalf of OSDI, Mr. Rashid Butt attended the event.

 

First AMC Formed in District Lasbela:


The first phase of OSDI’s signature Agriculture Development Project (ADP) is soon expected to commence in the newly selected focused community of District Lasbela (Baluchistan). In Sayarani Goth an Agro Management Committee (AMC) has been formed on 28th March 2019, (Thursday). OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt formally visited the village and discussed about the positive waves of change that would be created after initiation of this project. He motivated the participants to whole-heartedly share their learnings with other people as well; to create a multiplier effect. Altogether, 16 members of the community attended the event.

 

LDP Beneficiaries Trained in district Lasbela:


On 28th March 2019 (Thursday), beneficiaries of Mangyani and Sayarani Goth were trained by OSDI’s appointed veterinary expert – Dr. Kareem. The purpose of this training was to educate the beneficiaries supported under the Livestock Development Project (LDP) regarding best practices for goat management.

During this session, Dr. Kareem guided the learners about basic tips and techniques that if taken care of could help in maintaining a healthy livestock. Farmers were also informed about various type of diseases and how they could result in ill-health of the animal if ignored.

26 participants attended this informative session.

 

Joint Monitoring Visit by NCHD and OSDI in TLC Chib Sheikh:


On 25th March 2019 (Monday), a joint team led by senior officials of OSDI and NCHD paid a visit to the OSDI’s Built Temporary Leanirng Center (TLC) in Chib Sheikh community in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). The purpose of this visit was to monitor the overall functioning of the TLC.

From NCHD, Mr. Zahid Baloch (DD), Mr. Rafique (DPM), Mr. Najeeb (Coordinator Adult Literacy) and Ms. Khairunnisa (Field Coordinator) came and on behalf of OSDI, Ms. Munal (M&E Co-ordinator) and Mr. Rashid (Team Leader – Lasbela) were present. Course books that were received from the DEO’s office were handed over to the TLC teachers on this day.

Moreover, the sports material that was donated by NRSP was also provided to the teachers. Representatives of both NCHD and OSDI seemed satisfied with the TLC’s smooth functioning.

 

World Water Day & Pakistan Day celebrated in TLC of Arab Seray:


According to the United Nations, globally 2.1 billion people live without having access to safe drinking water. To train and educate the minors regarding the significance of clean water and the necessity to save every droplet that they use; OSDI conducted an awareness raising session in the Temporary Learning Center (TLC) of Arab Seray in district Mardan (KPK). Another important activity that took place on the same day was the celebration of Pakistan Resolution Day. The event took place on 23rd March 2019 (Saturday), to celebrate both the significant days together i.e. World Water Day & Pakistan Day.

OSDI’s Head of District Mardan – Mr. Sajjad Said held a thorough session with the students in which he briefed them about various ways to avoid wastage of water. Students were also informed how their eco system and natural habitat could remain intact if unnecessary wastage of water is taken care of. The students and teachers enjoyed the awareness session and vowed to be careful about water leakages and unnecessary consumption.

Mr. Said also highlighted the countless efforts made by our ancestors to build an Independent state. Students gave speeches and sang patriotic songs together.

 

Final Year Exams conducted in TLC of Arab Seray:


OSDI constructed a Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the susceptible rural community of Arab Seray in district Mardan (KPK) to overcome illiteracy issue and provide quality education to the less privileged. Nearly, 47% of the children were out-of-school due to unavailability of any educational facility in this area.

The TLC was officially inaugurated on 23rd January 2018 (Tuesday) after which the percentage of school going children increased from 53% to 88% in this community. For the first time, final year examination has been conducted in this school from 16th – 22nd March 2019.

Successful achievers shall soon be awarded with prizes on the Results Day scheduled in the end of this month.

 

Enrollment Awareness Raising Walk in Ahora:


The district education department of Lasbela (Baluchistan) is very keen on enlightening the masses about the significance of education in order to improve the literacy rate within this region. For this purpose, several meetings, activities and follow-ups are consecutively made by the concerned district authorities. On 21st March 2019 (Thursday), an enrollment awareness walk was held in the Government Boys Middle School (GBMS) in Ahora. The campaign was well-attended by students, teachers, government officials, representatives of social sector and others. On behalf of OSDI – Mr. Rashid Butt participated in this walk.

Due to OSDI’s active advocacy, funds worth of PKR 200,000 were previously provided in cash to this school for shed and washroom construction. Besides this, the school’s management also had a water line installed to bring clean water from a distance of 2000 ft. after which a small garden was created in the school’s backyard.

As a positive outcome of this enrollment awareness raising walk, 70 new students have recently been enrolled in this school. The current strength of students has now reached to 220.

 

World Forestry Day celebrated in district Lasbela:


Humans cannot survive without trees. Their survival has always been closely linked to forests. Each year, the International Day of Forests or World Forestry Day is celebrated around the globe to create public awareness on the need, values and contributions of trees and plants in our lives.

On 21st March 2019 (Thursday), OSDI participated in the plantation activity held at the prestigious Baluchistan Residential College (BRC) in district Lasbela. The event was graced by the Honorable Deputy Commissioner of Lasbela – Mr. Shabir Mengal. OSDI’s Team Leader – Mr. Rashid Butt also planted a tree on the occasion. Dignitaries from media, academia and government officials were also present during the ceremony.

More than a 1000 plants have been distributed by OSDI since its intervention in this district under the Natural Resource Management Project (NRM); to turn our focused communities into greener societies.

 

LDP Phase 2 initiated in Sayarani & Mangyani Goths:


There are 5 little settlements scattered around the community of Sayarani Goth. These settlements comprise of Saleh Goth, Yousuf Goth, Bilal Khaskheli Goth, Umrani Goth, and Sayarani Goth. OSDI selected beneficiaries from 14 households of this community and 6 beneficiaries were chosen from the community of Mangyani Goth to participate in the second phase of Livestock Development Project (LDP) in district Lasbela (Baluchistan).

Both the settlements i.e. Sayarani Goth and Mangyani Goth are located in the revenue village of Retalara, U.C. Wayaro in this district. 12 pregnant does and 2 bucks were distributed to the beneficiaries of Manyani Goth and 28 pregnant does and 6 bucks were given in Sayarani Goth on 14th March 2019 (Thursday).

Prior to distributing the livestock all the 48 animals were de-wormed by OSDI’s appointed veterinary expert. 11 female beneficiaries and 9 males have benefitted from this project.

 

Sports & Stationary Items Donated by NRSP:


The earnest efforts of OSDI have been acknowledged at every platform in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). On 9th March 2019 (Saturday), Mr. Arshad Iqbal – District Project Manager at National Rural Support Program (NRSP) generously donated sports and stationary items to OSDI.

Sports tools shall be handed over to the management of Temporary Learning Centers (TLC) in revenue village of Chib Sheikh and the stationary items shall be kept for the students of Sayarani Goth. The TLC is scheduled to be built soon in Sayarani community; however, due to the recent floods in the region, a delay in its construction has been witnessed. Extensive efforts shall begin towards student’s enrollment upon completion of the TLC in Sayarani Goth.

Water Management Committee formed in Mardan:


Scarcity of water is a major issue in the rural areas of Pakistan. In response to overcome water poverty in the newly selected focused communities of district Mardan (KPK), a meeting was held under the supervision of Mr. Sajjad Said on 12th March 2019 (Tuesday). Representatives consisting of 5 members in each team were invited from Prrang Dara, Lower Baizad Banda and Boday Qabar villages.

Mr. Sajjad began the meeting by highlighting the water scarcity issues and multiple ways to overcome it. He informed the committees about OSDI’s sustainability creating approaches. Mr. Said, asked the committee members to ensure PKR 100 per month is collected from each household of their village. This amount would be used in the repairing and maintenance of the bore or solar panels. WMC members were also asked to collect 1/5 percent of community’s contribution to meet the bore expense. The committee members nominated their WMC chairman’s themselves to proceed futher with this project.

30 households from Lower Baizad Banda, 25 families from Boday Qabar and 30 beneficiary homes from Parrang Dara would be facilitated with clean water. Currently, the residents of Lower Baizad Banda avail water from a spring nearby, people of Boday Qabar fetch water from a well which is located at a distance of 2kms and families of Parrang Dara either take water from the tube-well of Mr. Khan (located in a garden) else have to visit another village name “Sherabad” which is 2kms away.

 

Transfer of OSDI’s built TLC to NCHD:


On 22nd November 2018, OSDI signed a MoU with National Commission for Human Development in its Head office, to collectively work towards the betterment of education in the under-privileged rural district of Lasbela (Baluchistan). According to the contract OSDI shall identify localities deprived of education and construct 2 classrooms based Temporary Learning Centers (TLC) in them. Focus shall be primarily made on 100% student enrollment; especially that of girls within the selected communities by OSDI’s field staff.

Secondly, the community youth shall be proactively engaged to attend the Adult Literacy Classes in the evening. Proceeding further with our commitment the TLC built by OSDI within the revenue village of Chib Sheikh has been formally transferred to NCHD on 13th March 2019 (Wednesday). Students who obtained high scores during the final exams were awarded with prizes.

In near future, more TLC’s would be handed over to the authority. Mr. Wahid Shakir – DEO (Lasbela) was also present on the occasion and stated that, “Efforts would be made by him to have this school adopted by the government in the coming days. However, it is based upon approval by the senior management of the government.” Mr. Shakir was mesmerized by meeting the Adult Literacy class students and thoroughly appreciated OSDI’s efforts. These illiterate youth are now able to read newspapers on their own. Representatives of School Management Committee (SMC) and ex-counselor – Mr. Khan were also present during the event.

 

OSDI arranges Course Books for PCS students:


In the revenue village of Sangal, Union Council Layari, district Lasbela (Baluchistan) is a small school being operated by the management of Hingol National Park (HNP). As previously there was no school available within this community; so nearly all the children were out-of-school.

Currently, there are 35 students enrolled in this educational facility. The management of Primary Community School of Hingol requested the Team Leader of district Lasbela – Mr. Rashid Butt on 8th March 2019 (Friday) to help them arrange course books for these vulnerable students from District Education Officer (DEO) – Lasbela.

Upon Mr. Rashid’s pledge the course books were arranged by Mr. Wahid Shakir (DEO - Lasbela) and handed over to the school’s management.

 

Livestock health check-up in district Mardan:


On 8th March 2019 (Friday), health of animals distributed under Livestock Development Project (LDP) was checked. OSDI’s Field Assistant – Mr. Ibrar Ali went to all the 19 beneficiary households of LDP for weight monitoring and checking upon the physical condition of calves distributed during the previous year.

Since, one animal had died due to a life-threatening disease previously; hence, OSDI had all the animals vaccinated against Septicemia, a serious blood stream infection to avoid any further animal mortality.

All the animals weighed were in healthy condition and have matured now. They shall soon start bearing kids. One cow is already in the first month of its fertility. Beneficiaries shall soon be trained by veterinary doctor to educate them about various animal diseases and appropriate measures to safeguard them from getting infected.

 

Plants donated by Hingol National Park:


100 plants were generously donated by Hingol National Park on 8th March 2019 (Friday) to OSDI in district Lasbela (Baluchistan). These plants consisted of Conocarpus, Jamun (Black Plum) and Peepal (Fig Tree) species.

Facilitating the 20 susceptible households of Kareer Goth, OSDI distributed 5 plants per household within this community. The plants have been distributed under the Natural Resource Management (NRM) project of OSDI; which aims to not only to help lower the climatic temperatures but also beautify the area.

Kareer Goth has also been bestowed with a water facility and water storage tank by OSDI, last year.
